At any rate, I think in this case the 285s are a better buy. The only advantage is the 460 has DX11 support, but at the same time (assuming he's playing at 1080p) a single 460 will struggle in heavy DX11 titles like Metro/DA2/AvP etc.
Okay, so maybe there's been few DX11 patches, but it's certainly far from accurate to say that 'almost all' games get DX11 patches ... I just wanted the dude who's building the rig to understand that there are actually very few DX11 games, and very very few games that have gotten DX11 patches after release. WoW, Shogun, and LotR are the only confirmed cases on this thread, and Crysis 2 ... we'll see if it actually happens

And there's definitely no games that only run on DX11, and from what I've seen, DX10 mode looks very comparable to DX11 on every game I've compared the two on. The differences are very subtle, that's for sure.

If we're talking about a temporary rig here anyways, and it's not an SLI board, I'd say see if you can get a single 285 for $75 and call it a day. Aside from DX11 it's just as good a card as a GTX460, at least at stock. 460 has more OC'ing headroom though.

That's what I'd do, unless you're planning on re-using the 460 (maybe adding a 2nd one) when you do the i7 rebuild. In which case, get that.

I was going to use the gtx460 in my i7 build. and in a few months when I build it the gtx460's will be about 100 or 120$ Or buy another single card solution from my contact then, im not sure. All I really want is high AA and AF in 1080p.

I am waiting to hear back from my contact (guy who is selling me these items) to see if he has that 5870 for sale and for how much.

I am going to use the gtx460 or whatever card I get, in my q9550 rig, then when I build my i7, i will put the card I get now in the i7 rig and buy a 2nd card so I can do SLI. I won't be doing the i7 rig for a few months though. So.. and power usage is a big thing for me. and the gtx285 uses about 30% more power than the gtx 460.. so if their both equal in performance and I will only use one card at a time, and one of them uses 30% more electricity... The obvious answer seems like the gtx 460... I can get the gtx285s and sell them to you guys if you want them.. remember, they don't have warrenties, but they have been used very very little.
