After countless discussions and research...

Thread Starter
Anyone remember the post I did before about a $3000-4000 dollar build for my roommate? Well we've searched around, read reviews, looked for products, took recommendations and changed things around a bit. He's decided to put in few hundred more into it to make it a much better price-performance build than the previous i7 2600K. However, due to the cost of WC`ing here, he is not going to do that because it is extremely expensive (will add another $2000 to the build). Therefore, he want to keep it strictly "machine".

So, seeking more advice ASAP as he wants this to be done before the end of the month:

1x i7 990X
1x Asus Rampage III BE w/ ThunderBolt LAN/Audio combo
1x Corsair Dominator GT 3X4GB 2000MHz
2x EVGA GTX 580 SC
1x Antec High Current Pro 1200W
2x Intel 510 Series 120GB SSD
1x WDC Black 2TB
1x Asus 24X DVD Burner
1x CM HAF X
1x Corsair H70 CPU Cooler

Total comes to ~ $3900 (+ 12% taxes here in Vancouver, BC.)

Any advice? Especially on fans/cooling because no WC will be done as it is simply too expensive here and will take away too much from the budget of the system alone.

Thanks!

--------------------------------------------------

EDIT ... REVISED:

1x i7 2600K
1x Asus Maximus IV Extreme
1x Asus Xonar Essence STX
1x Corsair Dominator GT 2X4GB 2000MHz
2x EVGA GTX 580 SC
1x Corsair AX1200
2x Intel 510 Series 120GB SSD
1x WDC Black 2TB
1x Asus 24X DVD Burner
1x CM HAF 932 Black
1x Thermalright Silver Arrow

~ $3,100

For price-performance, you can't really beat sandy bridge.....The 990x is not worth the price and the same goes for all extreme processors...

I never recommend spending that much on a PC either. Two 590's is excessive too. I'd rather save the money and put it towards another build down the road. But that is just me.

Sorry I meant to put 580 !

The first time we made the post it was a 2600K and GTX 590 that build was $600 less than this one!

I don't even deal much with Intel anymore but I would agree, 990x is not the way to go. You would be best with a i7 2600k IMO. Intel and AMD both are still/about to release more of their new lines. I would wait and see what comes about, shouldnt be too much more of a wait.

If you are sticking to Air cooling, Id suggest the Thermalright Silver Arrow. Details can be found in my sig.

Thanks I will look into that cooler. I updated first post with a 2600K version, which is only $400 less! What do you think?

Basically he is a hardcore gamer with a 30" Samsung LED Monitor, so he wants to run @ 2560X1600. As well, he is a hardcore computer programmer and do some video encoding for his hobby.

Looks good. But I wouldn't go with two solid state drives..... One is plenty fast. If you want more space with SSD speed, a raid card would do better.

link your looking for.... http://www.overclock.net/intel-gener...000-build.html

I know what you mean about the costs for a nice watercooling loop. I just completed a build that I am hoping to sell and have about $1200 in the watercooling components alone. But your just a hop and a skip across the border, why not have someone in that states (like me here in WA) order the stuff for you? Do you not have any relatives that live in the states?

Seems like it would be worth the extra effort if it will save you that much $$
