Virtualization - 6 Core AMD versus i5

Hi guys, long time no post!

Looking into building a decent spec'd machine at work as a spare to boot images of our servers virtually in a DR situation.

RAM is obvious, as much as you can get, so this doesn't really come into question as no matter what processor/mobo combination we choose we can always throw 8GB+ RAM in the build.

What I am keen to hear is opinions from people with experience in this field regards going with a 6 core AMD (this allows us to allocate 2 cores per VM for example) or to go for a super fast Sandy i5.

When it comes to multiple core versus individual core speed, what wins when it comes to virtualization? In my brain it is shouting AMD as I think offering a VM 2 cores specifically will always render the VM more useable than having it allocated 1 quicker core on an Intel?

AMD - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/204933
Intel - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/251596

Thoughts?

Why are you comparing whatever AMD with i5? Compare it with i7 2600k or i7 970.

Look at the prices on both.

That's a top of the line AMD 6 core at £160ish. That's the equivelant best Intel I can get for the money based on price.

They won't spent i7 money, but if it helps, would pure single core speed of an i7 still offer better performance for a VM versus a VM running with 2 cores assigned from a 6 core AMD?

Why dont you take i7 970 and assign its 2 cores to VM. Comparing a 4core to 6core is just wrong.

It's not at all if you actually read what I am saying

Here's a scenario to make you understand, maybe:

I have 3 VM's running in my machine - With the AMD I can assign 2 of the VM's with 2 cores.

With the Intel I can only assign 1 core to each machine.

The Intel's are quicker, as we know. So in the scenario above, will the 3 VM's run as well with the single assigned faster i5/i7 core or with 2 cores assigned from the AMD?

the i7 series is better for tasks such as virtualization...so get i7 8xx or i7 9xx or i7 2600k for that pupose
forget about i5 or x6..........

How CPU intensive are the tasks run on each VM? If the workload is more parallel on each VM, the X6 should be faster. If the tasks are more serial, the i5 would be faster.
