Thanks dude.

In the situation the machine is being built for, our DC could be running as a VM from it. So this is my main concern. Also another server hosting our SQL backends with 40 users potentially accessing as well as file servers etc of course.

Thanks Duckie. Appreciated.

No doubting server chips dominate. If I had the money to spec a dual Xeon server, this thread wouldn't exist.

We only want to spend the money on building a decent enough spec PC to handle the task as you'll agree the price difference is mind blowing.

I know people will argue you need the proper tools to do it properly. But in all honesty this machine is likely to sit dormant for a 6 months at a time and is likely to only ever be used for testing and in the case of our main office being blown up or burned to the ground.

see, my opinion will be an i7...try to find any old second hand i7 8xx or i7 9xx series processor and use it....the 8 threads will obviously help in parallelized tasks...and an i7 will still be faster in serial tasks too compared to x6....

so if u can find a gud deal on i7's i say go for it....otherwise...an x6 would be gud for ur needs....due to 2 extra cores......

hope i helped.....

I would choose the X6 if we're comparing by price. You'd be better off with the dedicated cores. Are you considering overclocking it?
