hey guys just starting to overclock my 6990 and well never overclocked a gpu before outside of CCC.

so i guess these are the following things im just not fully comfortable with and i know that you guys can help cos well you always seem to

1.Burn in test program
2.Info on rasing your vcore and mem speeds
3 Bios flash or just use afterburner?
4.anything at all that you guys have lernt that could help me out

Hi,

First I do not recommend any burn-in tes program. They are not reliable and will stress your card more than necessary. Thus it could fried your card especially the VRAM.
Use a heavy GPU game like BC2 or Metro2033/crysis

The only way I overclock my GPU is the following :

1. Install any software to watch your temps
2. raise Core frequency by 10Mhz until you see artifacts or crash while gaming
3. Once unstable bump Vcore a bit and retry.
4. follow step 3 until you find your Frequency or you hit a stability wall due to heat.
5. Put stock Vcore and frequency and work the same way for memory
6. Raise Vcore and Core / VRAM frequency ath the point you were stable and test for stability
6bis. Add extra Vcore until you hit stability
7. Enjoy

You may want to install Afterburner for the custom fan profile which is most recommended

The secret : be patient and you won't regret it, be quick and you're bricked

I read some cards do that noise ..
I would be able to elaborate on that since I don't own one

You're watercooled Very good choice ! You free to overclock way more than air cooling cards

I suggest you check out the link I gave you Most people are also on water and I'm sure that'll give you a starting point.

No because when you're not gaming your core are downclocked by driver to save energy and heat

It's probably just coil whine when you run something like Kombuster/Furmark/OCCT or hit 200+fps.
  • Switch the BIOS switch on the card to BIOS 2.
  • Use MSI Afterburner 2.2 beta 2. to OC and setup profiles for 2D(normal) and 3D(gaming) modes.
  • Personally, I would only use Kombuster(little K in top left) to initially test out stability for 30 secs or so, the other tests are too harsh and don't work properly without disabling OCP which you don't want to do unless you're using LN2.
  • Then run Unigine Heaven in a loop for a couple of runs. If no artifacts appear on screen then it should be pretty stable. Start playing games and if it crashes, lower the frequency by 10Mhz each time.
  • You can probably use up to 1.3V. 1000Mhz core should be easy with WCing.
