Single 6990 vs 6970 crossfire

Thread Starter
Which is faster? 6990 or 6970 in crossfire? 6970 is a bit cheaper and some people say it is faster but how much faster?

Some games don't work well in Crossfire so will the 6990 perform better then or will it be the same since it is a dual core card?

I believe the 6970s are faster, because the 6990 is downclocked a bit.

Edit: Not by much, but faster by about 5-10 frames give or take.

the 6990 has 2 HD6970 cores downclocked from 880 on core to 800 so ya the 6970 is faster.
but the 6990 have a bios switch that OC it to a stock 6970 clock

anyway if you dont lack PCI slots getting 6970's will be better they will run cooler and will OC much higher.

if you have only 2 PCI slots and you plan on upgrading a 6990 is a better choice cause you can either get anther 6990 for quad CF or a 6970 for a tri CF...

The fps margin between xfire 6970's and a 6990 is minimal on 1 monitor, for shear compatiblity and ease, id just get the 6990 tbh.

I'll be using it with 3 monitors for Eyefinity. Is the 6990 still the better choice?

I say go with the 6990. The bios in the 6990 allows higher OC also than stock 6970. Also, finding reference 6970s with dual bios switch is getting harder to find.

I would go with the 6990. In some cases where Crossfire support is a problem your more likely to make it through without losing out on FPS with the 6990.

My 6970 has the bios switch but what is the advantage of it besides just flashing to other if one gets corrupted?

Here are the official clocks:
  • 6950 has 1408 unified shaders and is clocked at 800MHz core and 1250MHz memory
  • 6990 [per core] has 1536 unified shaders and is clocked at 830MHz core and 1250MHz memory
  • 6990 OC (flip the bios switch) [per core] has 1536 unified shaders and is clocked at 880MHz core and 1250MHz memory
  • 6970 has 1536 unified shaders and is clocked at 880MHz core and 1375MHz memory

Overclocked 6950's would be the best value by far, unlocked or not. Even if they are not overclocked they are still good. 6970 CFX is faster than the 6990.

If I was to rate only the 6950CFX/6970CFX/6990 on a scale of 1-10, it would be:
  • 6970 CFX: 10
  • 6990: 8
  • 6950 CFX: 7

Any Crossfire issue's you may run into with 6950CFX/6970CFX, you'll also run into with the 6990.

I think the 6990 is a good option if you NEED to have all that power in a single card OR if you want to do TriFIRE with only 2x cards down the road. Then there's always the coolness factor.
