I have 5 laptops at work that they want upgraded to windows 7. Not sure if this is such a good idea. Its either upgrade or install xp on them again

Specs:

1.83ghz intel T1400 Core Solo CPU
2 GB of DDR2 Ram
160GB 5300RPM hdd's

What do you guys think? Will they run like crap with windows 7 on them?

These are for a business and going to be on a domain so please don't recommend linux

My choices are XP Pro or Windows 7

I think they'll run fine. Netbooks have win7 on them and those systems are on par if not a bit more powerful than your average netbook.

Throw Linux on there and save cost and time. By time I mean boot and program loading times. And by cost I mean FREE OSes that work really well. Especially considering that many countries are beginning to use Linux as their work OS.

If that T1400 is dual-core it should be ok. I worked in an office the other week and they wanted Win 7 Ultimate on an old lappy running at 1.8 (6 years old?) and even though Windows Experience came out to be a 1.0--no kidding because of old nvidia card--it still ran fine, although encrypting the drive took forever, maybe an hour or more for 80gb.

I did. I just thought it would be nice for people to realize there's alternatives. Honestly though the OP could be fine with WIN7 (without Aero) but there's really no point beyond the fact that MS will eventually stop supporting XP with the next 2 years (iirc).

I've recently refurbished a bunch of 4ish year old Dell laptops at work from XP->Win 7 Pro and they run like a dream now, similar spec to your OP ref.
