Personally I would do the whole commuting thing, one end in Whistler and the other wherever I find a job. Snowboarding on your lunch break, oh yeah!
Other option; perpetual motion hydro plant. Big tube, turbine, fill tank, two portals. I'm sure you get the picture.
Oh and about the whole speed of the portal gun / going to the moon thing:
At the end of Portal 2 you fire a portal at the moon, it gets there pretty quickly.
However one of the tricks you can do with portals is to step halfway through one, fire the other one at a distant wall and step backwards at the same time. By the time the second portal gets there you are back where you started, allowing you to place portals in otherwise inaccessible locations.
This means that the portal both travels at a fairly slow speed, and yet can get to the moon in a few seconds...
Maybe there is some acceleration involved?
