Water cooling using a water dispenser

Thread Starter
Ok, so i'm in South Africa, and it get kinda hot here. With ambient temperatures of over 35C. What do you guys think of using a water dispenser to cool a CPU? Bore 2 holes, some pipe, pump and a block. This dispenser can make cold water of up to 8 deg Celsius.

I would love to see pictures if you built this eventually. My main concern would be that the water chiller wouldn't be able to keep up. It's supposed to work under insulated conditions, and if you're pumping it with lots of hot water I wouldn't imagine that it would stay cold long. You would have to hook up radiators and then you'd be back to square one, but with a useless water cooler now.

Still, I'm no expert on water dispensers, so I don't know what their cooling capabilities are. I would love to be wrong.

The cooling unit on your typical office water cooler does not have a duty cycle designed to be in a virtually always on situation, which this would be (unless you left your machine off frequently and for extended periods of time. Plus, you're dealing with a machine designed for a specific purpose and its sheer size makes this not an optimal solution. You'd be better of modding a mini refrigerator if you're thinking about using a fully manufactured appliance, but the mods would be a lot more extensive than drilling a couple holes.

I was just given a chilled water dispenser and my first thoughts were using it in my cooling loop

I wonder if this is worth pursuing?

ONLY way this could work is as a second loop, attached using a heat exchanger.

You could turn it on for a few min every now any then to blast the heat out of your system for a benchmark or some such.

Now, if you also had this attached to a 10 GAL res (use two of those 5gal water cooler bottles?) you could slowly pre-chill the water and when using the above method, keep temps relativity low for long periods of time.

Bottom line though, you CANNOT use it as your primary source of cooling as the chiller WILL die within a day or two.

ummm water dispenser was not built to be run all the time.

You will burn something out.

They cycle cool... basically cool, til a point.. and then wait until water gets up, and then recycle.

The load on a PC will kill the motor, which is why phase people tell you dont use a mini fridge, but use an AC...

something which was meant to be on, long periods of times.

depends if its a TEC or compressor chilling the water,a TEC probably wouldnt be up to it,but a compressor should.
condensation will be an issue though.

if it was TEC he would overshoot the TEC and it wouldnt work.

TEC's are not magic squares which can gobble an unlimited amount of heat.

They have a hot side, and a cold side, which can only move X amount of heat.

A computer tied to such a system would overshoot a TEC on a water dispenser easily, and the water would just get hotter and hotter until it boiled.
