How are they helping Sony?

I don't know what they're doing, but no one can help them now.

Their only chance is to somehow scapegoat hackers in general and force the government to pass new laws that will make them seem like innocent victims.

Not that I hadn't already lost faith in Sony but this is beyond pathetic. No firewall, and they knew the servers had not been updated? Your really asking for it. If you don't protect a network with the type of prescence that Sony has your an absolute moron. These guys are not getting another dime from me.

Alright, but could you use "You're" instead of "Your"?

Then I suppose he missed the post above mine. It should be "That's" and not "Thats." I suppose that is not as easy to see as my error then? It's certainly more obvious. Perhaps it's someone pointing out poor grammar because they do not like what I said? Thanks for citing the rules though as I did read them prior to becoming a member.

I don't think it was a shot at you, I think Your* and You're* just go noticed more. When I read "you're", I read it as "you are". When I read that's/thats, I just read it as "Thats" and not "That is". Just kind of how the person reads it in their head...but you're correct. (Plus, you're // your really bug a lot of people when used incorrectly. )

On topic: I believe they're also offering a free 30 days of PSN+, and more stuff too I guess? I don't use the PSN a lot...other than download Roster updates for Madden/NBA. So this doesn't really bother me. Although my Uncle is pretty upset that he can't play Zombies.

Linksys routers generally have the firewall built into the firmare of the router - the disc is simply a Wizard that configures that for the people that can't handle typing in a numeric network adress into the URL bar of their browser.

Firewalls are not panacea of security - but they do a good job of chopping off all kinds of stuff from going on. But to think that Sony didn't bother is kind of nuts, because it's not just about someone mooching some free FTP access, but that their entire internal network would be open to pretty much every kiddie script style attack.

on our network that deals with health care information..
They are hard core in informatics, and need to because of confidentiality and disclosure rules. But then, hospital systems will not be using cheezy routers with weak topology - rather, it will have a redundant networking topology, managed switches, enterprise routers, and extensive network logs that define every connection point. Even the wireless will be heavy, with enterprise grade Access Points that are tuned for a certain coverage area, and extremely restricive rules governing use.

I don't think a company like Sony needs to be so hard core - but then, they weren't even soft core since so much information was apparently compromised.

..for this, im pretty sure Sony is going to fire their entire networking group out of a cannon and into a nuetron star.....
I doubt it. It probably comes down to a corporate level decision not to spend cash on their networking, or to thrift it as much as possible. And it took them a while to actually detect the intrusion and do something about it - which stinks like rotten fish considering the dust up they had with GeoHot and Anon and others. It's like they blame OtherOS for the weakness, while the weakness was actually in the setup of their network interface.

Surely you would understand my reaction. Plenty of grammar mistakes, even on the first page. However, I see no point in correcting every poster and pointing them to the forum rules. Unless that is the preference here. I am still fairly new to Overclock.net.

On topic, I got hit two times by this breach. PSN and SOE. Luckily none of the cards I used on PSN are active, and I never used my CC on PSN. I just find it hard to believe that a company the size of Sony do not know to upgrade their servers and apply firewalls to the network.
