Switching motherboards in winxp

Thread Starter
Hey
Upon switching motherboards , what should I be concerned about in windows ? Should I uninstall some drivers before taking out the current motherboard and replacing it with the new one? Or should I just leave it intact?I don't know the procedure so please explain what should I remove/install before replacing it
Thanks!

The OS install is tied to the motherboard. You have to reinstall your operating system, then all of the drivers.

Best is a fresh Windows install.
I did a mobo switch today(using windows 7), I didn't uninstall anything, W7 installed almost everything for the new mobo, I needed just the Graphic card driver, the sound card drive and the USB3.0 driver (installed manually)
You have to call Microsoft for activation

I believe with windows XP your stuck with reinstalling the OS. With windows 7 you can just swap after you uninstall your old drivers.

What you could try just to make sure is the following:

1.) Backup all your pertinent data, chances are this wont work, you dont want to lose all your data if it doesn't.

2.)Uninstall all your motherboard/chipset drivers in windows.

3.)In the run portion of the start menu, type msconfig.

4.)In boot.ini settings select "/Safeboot" and "networking" (if you have a wired connection).

5.) Shut down your PC and unplug it.

6.) Swap out your hardware and make sure all connections are reconnected.

7.)Start up your PC, it should boot into safe mode.

This is the point at which you will know if it will work or not, even if you can boot into safemode, there is still a chance it will not work in normal mode.

8.)Install your motherboard/Chipset drivers.

9.) Reconfigure your Boot.ini is msconfig to boot normally.

10.)Restart your pc and hope for the best .

Hope this will work for you. I doubt it, but there is a chance. If you get a blue screen at start up, it means that your going to have to reinstall XP.

I swapped out a motherboard on xp before... all you have to do is a repair install( or you can try the above method). For the repair install load from the installer disc until you get to the main menu("key" for fresh install or "R" for repair)Push R and it will search for your current installation. Keep in mind if you do this correctly you will NOT lose your personal data, just maybe some settings that are driver related. Follow the instructions(will look like a regular install) and afterward you should be able to boot normally. You will not lose your data(i can vouch for this) but you WILL need to download new drivers(GPU and possible sound). You can back up your data just incase but its not necessary. Just remember to do a Repair Install instead of a Fresh Install. Good luck and i hope it goes well.

Thanks for responses guys.
However after repairing windows and other attemps i've came to conclusion that there's no better option than a fresh install of windows.
So that's what im going to do

I agree, that is your best option, as far as functionality and issues go. Good luck.
