What to look for in Sandy Bridge boards.

Thread Starter
I might be getting an financial aid refund. I'm thinking about trying out a Sandy Bridge setup if I don't go for a Bulldozer rig. From what I've heard, there's a lot more specifics to pairing a board with a cpu when it comes to Intel, especially if it's a Sandy Bridge setup. My question is, say I get an I7 2600k, do I simply look for a board with that socket and wattage support or is there more to it? I haven't dealt with an Intel setup in 10 years. The reason was the value factor. Sandy Bridge seems to close that gap. I'm a veteran with AMD, but with Intel I'm basically a born-again noob.

Look for a board with alot of phases (more than 10phases at the least). If you dont know what a phase is count the chokes (little grey/black cubes around the socket). This will ensure you get good clean power. Also look for a board with some good cooling aswell, if your into pushing your cpu as far as it will go id also consider thinking "can i stick fans on this" when you look at your vrm heatsinks. Other than that read some reviews on it, not the product reviews from like toms hardware, but reveiws from users.

You will probably need to read some round ups and some of the threads here.

Basic questions are:

1. Will you be overclocking?
2. Are you going to run a multi gpu setup?
3. How much is your budget?

what are you doing?
LN2 runs on a gigabyte ud4 b3 is a no... i've tried and just doesn't work well
Overclocking for everyday use is awesome with the ud4 b3 board though....

We need to know what you will be doing with your rig

generally speaking (good for extreme overclocking)
high end:
-ud7
-maximus
-asrock fatality

medium range (good for everyday/average overclocking... will get you 5ghz on a good chip or more)
p8p67 pro
ud4 b3
asrock extreme 4

i havent had experience with any msi boards so i dont really know.... sorry

You want to look for what will suit your needs.... quality/number of vrm phases if you are looking to do extreme overclocking... type of onboard extras (bluetooth, usb 3 internal headers, etc), if your like me color scheme is important you don't want anything to clash lol ...

-sufficient heatsinks on necessary components

I don't do much with the one I have; it's more of a hobby/trophy. Overclocking is a must, only 1 gpu, and I have about an $800 budget. Anything other than the board I can choose for myself. I just need to look for the right board. I kinda fell in love with Asus boards.

800 for an entire system or mobo/cpu/ram?

The whole thing. I already have a cpu cooler, graphics card, and a monitor. I was thinking of using a KVM switch.

Probably, but I'm not going pricey on that. The one I have cost $50. I just want air flow.

Take a look at some of the Asrock boards, they are inexpensive but performs quite good.

I would have recommended the Asrock Pro3 P67 but it has a dodgy UEFI bios.

Asrock Extreme4 or 6 won't stretch your budget that much and they are proven capable overclockers.

If you really are going the Asus way, I've heard good things about the Asus P8P67 Pro.
