Computer Turns on Then Immediately Turns Off

Thread Starter
I built this computer myself and it's been working strong for me for about 4 years. All of a sudden, it turned off, and now when I go to turn it back on, it turns on for a split second, the mother board indicator reads "FF" and then the computer turns off immediately.

I got it to stay on once for like a half hour since this began happening. I thought the problem must have fixed itself. I went to view the monitor, and it said "no display," so the computer was on, but it wasn't outputting any display.

Any way of pinning down what the problem is? Based on my limited knowledge I am 80% sure it's power supply related. Don't know what's wrong with the power supply, it's an Antec True power 2.0 550 watt... also, if it is the power supply, could whatever have gone wrong damaged other parts of the computer?

Thank you for your help!

did you clear cmos? check memory?

I'd also look up "FF" in the mobo's manual.

When PSUs go out, they have a chance of taking out other components with them, but i agree with the person before me. Check what FF means before you do anything (in case it really is a PSU problem, you don't want to keep turning it on and risk frying more components)

FF means the system is booted up.. normally. But when working properly it goes through a bunch of other codes first, as it boots up other parts.

Sounds like a Motherboard/PSU Issue, had that when my PSU died, also Had that when I tried to unlock my x3 into a Quad.

I agree with the others, Look up what FF means, and try out a Bios Reset/Switching PSUs if it works. No Display could have been due to the PSU not being able to give power to the GPU.

cleared cmos.. took out the battery alll that stuff... still doing the same thing. Anyway of determining if it's a PSU issue over a motherboard issue or is it just a guessing game?

And yeah, I thought the same thing about the one time it did turn out, that the power supply may not have been providing the GPU power like it should have been.

Also, I had a thought that my GPU may have been too much for my PSU... I have no clue I upgraded it about 3 months ago it's a Gigabyte GTS 450 1g factory overclocked to 810 mhz

I did pretty much have my computer running 24/7.

Your PSU is quality and should be more than adequate for your rig.
Do you have a digital multimeter? If so you could jump start the PSU and check the voltages the PSU is outputting.

no digital multimeter and don't really know how to use one but im sure they're simple enough... but based on the symptoms, if I go ahead and stick a brand new PSU in this bad boy what do you think the chances are of it fixing the problem? Is it really a toss up?
