[W7N] Microsoft Security Essentials Scores Low on AV-Test - Page 3

Agreeing with post #2 here. MSE is as good as it's always been. Speaking of that, I need to remind you all to ONLY use the title in the source for the thread title, unless it's too long, then only truncate it, don't make up your own.

Yes. Higher detection rates, fewer false-positives, and no update pop-up to force off.

Can't believe Norton actually is pretty decent. It used to be worthless like McAfee.

Guess I'll have to give up on Avast and switch to BitDefender. You can enable silent/gaming mode to prevent any kind of popups whatsoever, including quarantine/virus notification/updates if you want. MSE isn't special in this regard...

Common sense is all you need to avoid viruses, trojans, or any form of malware.

Common sense isn't enough in today's world of Java, Flash, PDF exploits. I had a rouge antivirus install due to a Java exploit. Bear in mind this exploit happened on another large computer forum. (User was able to embed it)

I wonder how many users on here are using outdated versions of these plugins.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/

Unfortunately Avast didn't stop the infection.

I posted this a long time ago, av-test.org is owned and operated by several AV companies and has consistently over many years bashed free products and boosted paid products. I have also gone over their testing methods and debunked all of them. The entire site is based on fraudulent testing methods and heavy bias. Their scoring weights change month to month and are subjective.

A major issue with AV testing is that false-positives do not count against score, or count very little. So the best AV products are the ones that false-positive every packed EXE and every EXE under 10kb. Most of these AV's will label a 1 byte EXE a dangerous trojan when all it is is a single ret instruction set as the OEP.

MSE has the least FP's of any AV product I've ever seen tested. Microsoft also investigates all FP's within hours of samples being submitted (in my personal experience).

I agree, MSE is indeed quiet and doesn't suck up much of your resources if any, making it barely noticeable..

and that pretty much somes up everything in a nutshell lol but i think il toss in my own 2 cents as ive used a number of avs until i decided on avira. avg<< this a joke in it of itself, avast, bitdefender<< this is a joke in t of its self as well, trend micro, windows live one care, norton<< lol bloatware, macfee<<< lol just as bad as norton, kapersky didnt like when they made the the av for win7, and estnod32 << alittle slow and ram hungry. I finally settled on avira i loved avira so much i gotin to beta testing version 10 for them and never looked back. generally i dont get ant viruses but i dont do anything stupid but an av is got to have when you to bit torrent or kind of p2p. As for mse i do recall hear about it being rather good but i dont want any anti virus on my netbook as i dont want to waste on of the ram since it only has 1gb. other wise i try mse and i did think about it but since im not downloading on the netbook i affectingly call Mizore-Mini (desktop Mizore-chan- Laptop: Mizore-Mobile) i think i use common sense to help me not get a virus.

I ran for years without an anti-virus program and never got infected. I ran passive scans every month or two to make sure. I now run MSE b/c it is free, light and system resources, simple interface, and generally stays out of my way.

I like MSE but if they were to start charging I would just go back to no AV. If you are smart enough and keep on top of things you can avoid nearly any chance of infection. That has been my experience at least, the only time a computer of mine has been infected was when I moved home from college and my family started using my rig. That was a long time ago.

I always thought MSE was decent according to tech articles I read. I only use Symantec Endpoint anyhow. To me there is no better aside from hardware firewalls and such. Endpoint has saved my butt many times, especially the firewall.
