Voice chat software

Thread Starter
I used to have LAN parties for multiplayer gaming, until recently. Now, I play multiplayer games, mainly DotA, on the internet using Garena. I wanted to know if there were any softwares that would allow me to voice chat with my friends while playing DotA. Thanks in advance

Skype, Ventrillo or Teamspeak

What? Who uses skype for gaming? OP, your two choices are Ventrilo or Teamspeak. I prefer Ventrilo, but to each their own. Both are free, but you either need to use a computer as a server, or "rent one". Renting a 10 person Ventrilo server is usually like 5 bucks a month.

I'll be honest, I have no intention of spending money for voice chat. What about Teamspeak? Do I need to pay for that as well?

Like I said, both of them are free. The only thing you might pay for would be a dedicated server. If you can run a server client on one of your PCs then you don't need that. Check out http://www.dyndns.com/ for a free static ip address to host from.

The issue with teamspeak 3 is that in order to take advantage of it, you need to use a high bitrate codec, this makes it quite hard to host on a local computer with limited upstream bandwidth. If the OP doesn't want to pay for a dedicates server, Ventrilo is a better bet to run locally IMO.
