i7 970 or 2600k? (Dedicated Folding Rig) - Page 2

with both near max OC, the 970 will put out 10-15k more ppd, but it uses nearly double the power compared to 2600k (~200w vs 350w~)... also, the 2600k is much easier to OC & cool compared to the 970... not to mention it costs ~$300 less..

The 970 at 4.1 will get better PPD than a 2600k at 5GHz. 63k vs about 50 or so for the SB I think. Definitely go for the hex.

It doesn't cost $300 more if you buy it the way he mentioned in the OP.

ahh lol, well in that case i'd buy the 970, resell it, and build a 2600k rig

Those are not allowed to be resold.

The 970 is really still better for folding till the new 6/8 core are released.

lol people were reselling them all day

i mean, if his electricity is free then it's a much easier decision

but almost 2x power consumption for 10-15k more ppd it's not nearly as efficient as 2600k.... it'd also cost a bit more for the 970 rig since you need triple channel ram.. and a better cooling solution compared to a 2600k where you can throw on an h50 and hit ~4.6ghz.... an h50 on a 970 will probably be maxed out temp-wise at ~4ghz.. you'd need water cooling to fold at 4.2-4.4ghz...

so once you get down to the details, all things considered, the 2600k is currently the best choice for a dedicated folding rig

Look at his signature rig!
I promise I pay attention to things before I spout nonsense. >.<

All he needs to do is swap the chip.
And an h70 can easily do 4.2ghz on an i7 970.

4.2 is easy. I got that on air with more than acceptable temps. You could probably get 4.4 or better if you want to take your time with it.

what do you mean swap chips? isnt he building a whole new dedicated rig?

and if an h70 can do 4.2ghz on an 970, then it'll do 4.8ghz on a 2600k... it's all relative, im just saying the 2600k is much easier to cool/OC

OP lives in socal, ambient temps easily reach 30c+, and electricity is probably .20c-.30c kwh
