Netbook Boot Error.

Thread Starter
A few months ago I bought an Acer Aspire One A522. It worked for a few months, then stopped booting. I assumed it was a hard drive error, as the hard drive didn't even show up in BIOS, so I opened it up and made sure all of the connectors were plugged in. After working for another week on and off, I swapped hardrives and reinstalled Windows 7. Now, after two weeks of working, the same "no bootable device" error shows up. The BIOS shows that no hard drives are connected, yet I can hear the drive spinning up. Also, the hard drive LED doesn't turn on.

I have upgraded the ram, and opened the case up a few times in this process, so I am unsure if my warranty is voided. What is a good course of action to resolve this issue. I bought the netbook on Amazon, but again I don't know if they take returns that have been opened and upgraded.

Thanks

My advice would be to begin by being positive and not saying more to the RMA-tech support than you have to. Changing RAM & HDD doesn't void warranty. Since you probably have the original components you should return the netbook to stock config and return it as it was from the factory. If you begin telling all you've done to the lappy you'd raise so many questions with people that aren't trained to understand what you've done and it would take a lot of time until you get to speak with someone that actually knows what (s)he's talking about. If it's you who've broken it or voided the warranty they will simply send the lappy back.

It seems it may have some issues with the motherboard and most likely the RMA would be awarded. Could you test if the HDDs still work on a different rig? If they still work then the issue may be a broken SB chip on the board, if not then the power regulation part of the netbook could be broken - both of them meaning a motherboard swap.

Does your Netbook have SATA II connection? If so you might try pulling the drive, install it in your Desktop boot into SAFE mode and scan that puppy. It might have something on it that is messing with your OS.

Now it's possible that it's purely hardware related but I would try scanning in Safe mode and go from there.

A lot of the early acer netbooks needed a bios flash I dont know about your one though you should be able to find out if your model is one just by googling it. Also you flash them with the bios file on a usb flashdrive I cant remember what you have to do off hand you have to hold the power button down or something as I said just google it
