I think I'm ready for a sound card.

Thread Starter
Right now I'm using some on board VIA sound, and I was using a Creative SB1090 USB sound card, up until it stopped working correctly.

My Headphones I'm using are Grado SR80's, and I also have my computer hooked up to a Yamaha HTR-6130 5.1 receiver via optical. I need something mainly for music and movies that wont break the bank too much. Maybe $150ish at the most, I'm even willing to go used, but I need to know what to look for first.

So any suggestions for sound cards based on my set up, and what I'll be listening to?

EDIT: I will mostly be using my 5.1 set up. I'm pretty sure I don't need a headphone amp for my Grados. Also, gaming is not important to me at all. Most of the time when I'm playing a game, the game is muted and I'm listening to music, or have a movie playing on the other monitor.

The essence stx is the most recommended soundcard so you should look at that even though it is out of your price range.

Asus Xonar D1 or D2 (though D2 would once again be out of your pricerange).

Most people will tell you to stay away from creative's offerings. And that's about it. I can't think of any at your specific price range or close to it so there you go.

I'm honestly done with Creative, I loathed dealing with their drivers. Only reason I even had a Creative was because it was free and better than my onboard.

By no means am I an audio expert...but I've read on some post in the past that Asus Xonar cards if you are more into gaming while you should look into HT Omega Claro cards for home theater. There's also specific sound cards to choose based on whether you use your headphones or speakers more often. I'd say look for the best suggestions from other users as any sound card will sound great whether your are listening to music, watching a movie, or playing a game...with a few tweaks here and there.

In the end it comes down to what you pair your sound card to in terms of audio setup or headphones.

I like the Xonar DX I have seems to have a nice balence between games and music...
And the drivers seem pretty solid as a bonus too...
Oh and it's cheapish http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829132006

I'm confused, I didn't even ask for a sound card for gaming.
