Is CoreTemp 0.99.8 accurate?

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I have recently put together my new system and today I decided to run OCCT 3.1.0 just to see what kind of temps I would be getting before I start OC'ing. I am using default bios settings (1503 on an Asus P8P67 Deluxe), so the AI tuner tweaks my cpu to a very mild (100MHz) OC of 3.4GHz up from stock 3.3GHz (i5 2500K).

I ran OCCT for the automated 1hr test, during which none of my cores appeared to exceed 49 deg. C. (see attached screenshot - taken halfway through test). The system then sat at idle for approx 10 minutes, by which time CoreTemp was showing all my cores around 33ish deg. C.

After rebooting and entering my bios, the bios monitor was reading a CPU temp of 48 deg, which as I watched it over the next 60 - 90ish secs rose to 50 deg at which point I shut down my system.

Is this something I should be worried about? How accurate is CoreTemp, and is there a better way to check my CPU temps?

OCCT test result came back with no errors detected.

Thanks in advance,
Dodgee V

i use core temp and i find it pretty reliable as i see the same temps in hw monitor and asus ai suite. (~1-2deg difference at most)

Also 50deg is not much for i5 2500k, youre safe until at least 72deg under load

I use CoreTemp - think its reliable - it matches my temps shown in FanSpeed as well.

I have a Thermal Sensor in my Fan controller, which I have tried to check the temps too in certain places, and they are pretty much the same

It's as reliable as you are going to get when monitoring via software.

Youve placed one of your temp sensors in your cpu?

EDIT:

to answer op,coretemp works well for me and i have no reason to doubt it but you say temps are higher in bios under no load? yikes.

Have you tried any other software such as Aida64(AKA Everest)or even speedfan?

Lol @ shutting down your system at 50c. That's WELL within the safe zone.

I'd trust coretemp.

Did you read the bit where he says temps in bios say different?
Maybe this has caused doubt eh?

temps on my board with my cpu in bios are around 49-50deg as well. I can hear the fans spinning slightly faster too, which has to mean that the cpu is under some kind of load. I researched this a bit and even on OCN itself i have found people being in the same situation, therefore i decided that there is nothing to worry about

Thanks guys for your prompt replies!

Just to clarify - I realise that 50 deg is well within the safe zone for my CPU - what worried me is that the bios temp straight after a relatively "cold" bootup was HIGHER than at any time during an hour long burn test (at least according to CoreTemp).

If I'm going to start cranking up freqs, ratios and voltages, I'd like to know that the temp monitor I'm looking at is going to give me a reasonably accurate idea of how close things are getting to their temp limits!

I'll have a look at some other temp monitoring software and see how close they are to each other.

Thanks again guys,

later!
