From the outside, both LoL and HoN are the same game. Same objective, similar mechanics, same general idea on how to play.

Both are good games. LoL tries to make the game more casual the HoN does to appeal to a larger audience, but they don't sacrifice quality and have done a great job promoting the competitive scene. Riot is flying the top 8 teams out to Dreamhack for the season 1 finals.

HoN also has a solid competitive scene, I just don't know as much about it. Either one is a good choice to start up and play, just realize that the learning curve is steep on both and you probably will get yelled at often.

You cannot buy in game items that change the gameplay in HoN, LoL you can buy many over powered items that assure you a win every time you play.

DotA, HoN, and LoL are the best MOBA's out there right now. If you're interested in playing the game competitive I would either start with DotA or HoN. LoL, while it has ranked, is much better as a more casual friendly game, although with a longer time sink if you're unwilling to drop real money into the game. I started out playing DotA, moved to HoN, played LoL for over a year and now I brought a majority of my friends to HoN.

LoL is a great game, I just find it very unbalanced (rune system! joke.), and the skill sets very unimaginative (I understand it's to allow newcomers, however) , not the best game (gaining popularity, however.) if you're really trying to compete. It's far too easy, although I do enjoy how feeders give less money the more they are killed. I would suggest giving HoN a chance, starting with LoL just dumbs you down far too much. I like all the competition between the MOBA's.

It's a great genre and I'm personally glad to see it gaining in popularity with many other versions and their own styles being released. Unfortunately with dota 2 on the horizon I see HoN shrinking even further, but LoL staying somewhat the same in terms of players considering the idea and character designs are far more original ( but god damn boring).

tl;dr: Give the MOBA genre a chance, the replay value is amazing, the community is full of dumb asses.

Surprised there hasn't been much reference to DotA in this thread. Couple of things no one mentioned..

HoN is based very heavily on DotA and and a ton of the heroes have identical skill sets or mixed and matched skill sets. The devs have frequently looked at the latest DotA patches and applied some of the things IceFrog (DotA's dev) to HoN. In my opinion HoN is a game that is trying to be DotA but different at the same time and it just doesn't work for me. Last time I checked, albeit a while back, DotA's competitive scene dwarfed the likes of HoN and LoL.

Pendragon used to work on DotA with IceFrog but is now part of the LoL team, there was actually a pretty bad disconnect between the parties. See link below.

Valve has recruited IceFrog to work on DotA 2, which is simply going to be amazing. IceFrog, essentially the creator of the genre, is being paired with a great gaming company in Valve. DotA is still where its at as far as this genre is concerned and DotA 2 has potential to really put it on the map.

Almost an exact clone with a few heroes, names, animations/models when it was first released.

Also, something to add. There's a link going around that leads to a story (claimed by a valve insider) about the relationship between Icefrog and the Valve team, and him being a complete ass. Shortly after there is another link claiming again to be a few Valve employees denying everything about the article that was posted. Regardless dota 2 (no longer DotA) is going to be amazing. Some believe the recent DotA patch is a foreshadowing of the beta for dota 2 or at least a very early build.

Yeah I was just thinking about that but decided not to mention it because its more/less a rumor. I'm not crazy about .72, Huskar, SB, and TB are just insane. Bet you they nerf at least Huskar and maybe SB next balance patch. Thats a different thread though.
