Wow, so many people in this thread have never worked retail nor know anything about how a lot of retail companies work.

Come back when you are educated. Your hate posts are misdirected and unwarranted.

Actually, I have worked retail. And am probably far more educated than yourself. That's neither here nor there. The point is, no matter what a Corporation says is "right or wrong," there's a truer definition of right or wrong out there. What this guy did was right. And, he should get a promotion for it, not fired.

I've worked plenty of retail jobs to know different corporate policies. And what you are saying about right an wrong is subjective. I can think of possible human harm to be one "truer definition" that trumps yours. Just saying...

It's drilled into employees from day one: DO NOT PURSUE, DO NOT INTERVENE. Store merchandise is NOT worth your life.

Yea, there is a reason that there are locks on expensive stuff. And don't forget they have more camera's on you than you can image. You may be able to get in and out, but some is always watching and they are right next to a phone.

While I can see both sides of the debate here, considering that the employee didn't get hurt AND apprehended the person committing the crime, I think more of a "You dun goofed, go home for a week with no pay" with a subtle thumbs up is a better punishment rather than firing the employee.

But, with that said, if I were in his shoes, I'd do the same thing. I've always wanted to do a citizens arrest =]
