what soundcard should i get...

Well, after some research im gonna get a better soundcard. I know I want to get a Asus xonar but I don't know if I should get a DX, D2X, or a STX. I game most of the time but i enjoy listening to music as well. It will not play movies and will probably be used exclusively with headphones (though maybe someday I will get a decent 2 channel speaker system)

I would like to save the money, get the DX and some HD555s at the same time but I don't want to sacrifice sound quality to save some money. If I get the D2X OR STX, then I have to wait for my 555s. If it is a large jump in quality, then I don't mind (im not a audiophile so will I even hear a difference...). Last, what are the differences between the D2X and STX? they are about the same price and if I get the more expensive card, I want to get the one that suits my needs better. I know the STX has an amp for headphones but the rest is greek to me.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Xonar DX/DG I hear are essentially the same card but for different buses (PCI & PCIe). The Essence ST or STX would be more suited to what you're after though. I've heard good things about the Omega HT Claro Halo too.

I figured the STX would be best. Is it best suited for me because of headphones or gaming as primary listening.

I hear the Claro Halo is suited to headphones too, might want to check that out.

I think you'd be better off going with a DX and getting your 555s with it. The 555s are a good pair of phones, but they are indeed are semi-entry level. I feel that anything over the DX will be overkill for the 555s.

I see. What about 595s? Would I need more than a DX for them. Also for a DX, would I need to get a separate amp for the phones?

No, you won't need an amp for 555s or 595s. I own the 595s and I love them, however from my understanding they are modified 555s..so unless you can grab them for a good price, I'd probably opt for the 555s. (I grabbed my 595s for $100, or I would of went for the 555s)

Edit- The DX would still be a good match with either.

Thats definitely what I want to hear since I like to save some money when I can. I guess now im confused because i see so many people try and push the STX on people that claim headphones as primary listening medium. I guess i can see the D2X and STX being more suited for home theater and overkill for a gamer on 2 channel audio who listens to music some too. Thanks!

Any more input from anyone?

Eh. Ive had some creative cards and I really want to avoid them this time around.

Another question. Do Either the STX or DX have separate Headphone and speaker outputs? If not, could I just use a splitter with no signal loss or will i need to get a separate amp for after the signal is split?
