Did I do right? - Cooler placement

Hi All,

I've just replaced my old CoolerMaster CPU fan with arctic 11 PRO rev. 2. I do not overclock, everything is as default - the only thing I changed is that the cpu fan is controlled by intel QST. My CPU is intel E6400.

At idle time (10%~ cpu utilization) the temprature is about 55C. When the cpu start to become loaded (50% or so), It gets to 70C. It this too high? Did I somehow misplaced the heatsink? Do you know what the temprature for such a cpu should be with low-mainstream cooling unit?

Oh, and I forget to mention, I monitor my CPU temp with CoreTemp.

First of all fill your system's specs so we can help you out

Edit: Oh, I just saw that you mentioned your CPU already. Theoretically you're fine but your temp should be lower

I would think it's a bit on the hot side, 100% load temps should not be over the 70c range with an OC.

I see a few possibilities:
  • Too much thermal interface material (TIM)
  • Not enough thermal interface material
  • The Cooler Master heatsink is not tightened down against the CPU enough (too loose/weak contact)
  • Not enough airflow in the case to dissipate the heat

So which Cooler Master heatsink do you have exactly?

What was the way you applied the TIM? How much did you use?

What computer case do you have?

Finally: where do you keep your computer? Is it in an enclosed area, or is it out in the open?

That is not the maximum safe core temperature. It's not even related to the cores; instead, that's the Thermal Specification and it's measured on the "geometric center on the topside of the CPU's integrated heat spreader". So it's measured at the same place where we put thermal paste.

The actual maximum safe core temp is much higher than that (usually by about 20°C). So 70°C is still safe even though it's much higher than we should be expecting for his setup.

Did you make sure to remove the plastic wrap on the heatsink base and use thermal grease? You'd be surprised at how often this happens.

i think your problem HSF not even.take it out and check that how the TIM looks.is there any area that is without it.if so your best shot is to lap it.you will get best results if u lap both ur cpu and HSF. good luck

I remember that, used to run my q6600 with the plastic wrap overclocked back in the day, load temps were not that bad actually.

First of all, thank you all for the rapid response.

I think I need to make some clarification. The new fan is Arctic Cooler Pro 11 Rev. 2, not coolermaster. I didn't apply any TIM, as this fan comes with pre-installed TIM on its bottom. I don't think there is a plastic wrap, but I can lift the heatsink and see.
As for the position of the fan, I'm not sure whether it is installed correctly. I've uploaded a few pictures. As you can see, it almost touches the northbridge heatsink and it faces the steel bars are facing toward the power supply, so the air flows toward the northbridge and the power supply.

So, what do you recommend?
