You're missing the point. They've made this because of the apparent demand for Linux on the PS3 but most people will just look at it as a front.

Now if they had a demonstration of "We added Linux to the PS3 to do XX, XX, and even XX" people will be more in tune to the case of Geohot. More so than just the "Down with the evil corp known as Sony."

If you PS3 can give you amazing functionality out of the box by just simply adding this linux distro to it; then it makes Geohot's case sound more legitimate.

It also gives Sony a reason in the future to re-include such a feature, instead of trying to lock down the hardware and keep the moders out in fear of everyone just doing it to play games for free.

I don't even understand what you're babbling on about and confused as to what your actual thoughts on the topic are.

Your first post states it's worthless and that you need demonstrations. Now you're defending the whole think stating you simply wish to see a useful demonstration to show it's "not just for piracy" or something? As far as I'm concerned, OtherOS can't load PS3 games as Linux doesn't have a PS3 emulator. I think that would require someone writing a loader which is pretty much inevitable as you'll read below.

Onto something else though..may I ask why you seem to have a hard on for Geohot? Not only you of course, but all you hear is Geohot and Anonymous and blah blah blah. If you were informed, you'd know Geohot did really nothing other than use someone else's exploit and gain Sony's attention for it.

You can say what you want about Geohots motives, but again, if you understand how these things actually work, you'd know that whether or not Geohot supported loading of commercial games in this CFW or not, it was only a matter of time until it was enabled.

If you look at the PSP scene which uses pretty much an identical system as the PS3. There are PSP CFW that DO NOT include a commercial game loader, it's simply one additional download on top of the CFW.

So to wrap things up..
OtherOS++ on PS3 - I support it regardless of what it does. Releasing a product with features and then revoking them half way through it's life. Yes, I understand it was a security flaw, blah blah. It's called testing and as we've seen recently, whether it comes to checking their coding (which led to the CFW), testing their applications (which led to Linux being removed) or simply testing their security and following common administrative practices. (which led to PSN being down), they just aren't the best at testing.

Geohot - I feel there's more to the story, did he has an official SDK or state "THIS IS FOR PIRACY"? Dark_Alex and many others who you'll never have heard of have been making CFW for the PSP for years now which is a similar concept and have had no legal action.

I actually might some day buy a used PS3 just to load linux on it, the initial reason sony did not want people to load linux on a ps3 is because they were losing money on every ps3 sold and making the money back on games, however it is now cheaper for them to make than they sell it for.

When ps3 came out they LOST money on every one sold. the hardware cost them more than $600 AT THE TIME.

The US Government even saw the PS3 as a good Linux Server Cluster option, as I am sure many people did for various reasons.

Why might I load linux on one? HTPC, Internet machine, Play NES ROMS, Blue Ray Player, Play Linux PC games, Run Wine play windows games, Run Wine load windows programs... Sounds cool.

You could actually load linux, load up wine and then run PC games on your linux ps3 LOL.

But how fast would it run windows in wine? I know there was yellow dog linux but it was only slightly optimized from what i remember. Is there even a free, consumer level version of linux that would be optimized 100% for the cell?

My thoughts are, what's the point? Can you give me a legitimate reason for this to exist or does it just to prove Sony wrong.

If this project has a clear direction with a reason to exist then it could be something amazing for PS3 users.

If it just exists to say to Sony and others "Look, the PS3 has linux just like we wanted" yet doesn't really add anything then there's no point in the project.

Reread the wording. I said the news story is useless without demonstrations of the OS itself.

I know who Dark_Alex is as I'm not fool to the Homebrew scene.

Homebrew is a good example of what I'm talking about, it brought more functionality to the PSP and DS.

hey i remember my 40gb ps3 cechh series had a other os version i was so noob,as for ps3

now i am very thankfull for the hackers becouse they have bringed other os to it, using other os u

can do alot of things like never need ftp server for making a connection from ps3 to pc, and u can

run some cool thing "in future like" xbmc or some thing, its cool and as some one say its a good htpc

and hey lets take an example of pcsx2 linux version it can run on linux! but the cell based processor

and like a 7900gtx gpu it would be so slow , yeah its a noob idea but dont forget some emulators

wont work on a non based other os ps3 u know, u can use it as an low end pc,internet msn or

some thing its a good thing to have in my ps3 for sure, and look to the good side u can save some amps
and help protecting the enviroment, becouse of using my ps3 as an htpc....

Wine will not work on the PS3 as it is not an x86-based system. You would need to use an emulator which would be impossible to play any modern game with.

I see folks on here asking if they should fold on their P4, which is just as worthless as PS3 folding. But if you have the console, and it's not being used, might as well fold on it. You fold 24/7 on your sig rig, there's no difference besides electricity cost.
