Sabertooth x58 ssd?

Thread Starter
Either vertex 2 or c300. I have read that because intel drivers cannot run natively over the SATA III on this mobo, that I should run any ssd I get over sata II connection.

Is this correct?

If so, which drive should I get to maximize speeds with my mobo?

Thank you!

I think what you meant is that the X58 chipset doesn't natively support Sata III 6.0gb. You have to use the Marvel Sata III controller. This being the case then yes for the Vertex 2 or any other Sata II SSD use the Intel controller in AHCI with Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver. I'm using a similar setup with an Intel X25M G2 160gb ssd on the intel Sata II controller with excellent results. I would venture to say that the Intel X25M will match the performance of the C300 on the Marvell Sata III. If you want use a Sata III SSD to it's potential the only option is Sandy Bridge P67 or wait for X68.

So would my speeds be better if I were to go with the c300 or vertex 2 over sata II?

Depending on what your near future plans are. If you are staying with X58 1366 I'd go with the Vertex 2, much better buys on Sata II SSD's now. From what I've read any of the Sandforce Sata II drives (OCZ, Corsair, ect.) will beat the Crucial C300 on the Intel Sata II controller. My personal preference is for Intel drives, an X25M or the G3 320 as the OCZ Vertex drives have a history of problems. If you can swing a Sata III drive I would have to risk getting a Vertex 3 Max Iops, that way you'd be ready for P67 or X68.

Well, I'm not planning on updating any time soon. Are the intel drives faster than the vertex 2? I have been looking at the 320 series 120GB drive.

The Intel drives are far and away more reliable than the OCZ. I personally would choose the 320 120 gb over any Vertex 2 and you won't notice any speed difference. Also if you can still find an X25M 120gb with the 34nm Nand I'd get it over the 320.

Wow I just checked and Newegg has the 320 120gb for $219, that's a hell of a good buy!

I am in the same delima with my MB. We have the same chipset (Marvel 9128) on our boards and to tell you the truth, don't go with the Marvel 6GB/sec Sata III port... It's very limited and uses one PCI-X lane... Meaning if you go all out on a Vertex 3, it will be capped at 350-400MB sequential read speeds (even though it maxes at 500+ R/W)... so technically the Vertex 3 is too fast for our drives.....
At the price, I considered RAIDing two or three 60GB Vertex 2's.
Then you will lose TRIM, and I personally don't know about the Vertex 2's GC(Garbage Collection) but know it's better than my Vertex 1's... I literally have to leave my drives in idle overnight to get a good benchmark...
Then again, $300 for a 120GB Vertex 3 will get you a futureproof drive that pretty much doesn't need TRIM and have the fastest read/writes with the latest sandforce controllers...

uh what?

i just switched from x25m to c300 128gb and i definitely noticed some key differences, example: my f1 2010 stutter alot less( a common issue due to it's large temp file)
