Those free mobos are not exactly very overclocking-friendly depending on what CPU you choose
post #3 of 11
all of the free boards are 3+1 power
good enough for 65w cpu

none of the boards have better than 4+1 power phase
will work for 95w cpu, with mild overclock

i wouldnt overclock a 125+w cpu in any of them

best bang for $150 would be the x4 840 and Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H

if you are fairly close to microcenter, you can go there, their sales reps are very knowledgeable

So if I was to go with the x4 965 which board will be good. I don't do much gaming or over clocking since this will be for a media server.

thanks

If you are going to get an x4 965, you may end up with a better deal if you buy the CPU + board somewhere else.
None of the free boards are safely 125W capable. In fact I don't even think one of them (the Gigabyte) is 125W rated by manufacturer at all.

I see they jsut drop the price down again of some of these deals. For $150 budget ( cheaper the better) what deal would be best fit for Media server?

thanks

I disagree with this comment. I have a Biostar A780L3G that can handle a Phenom II x6 1090T and 970. I test it myself and also add VRM coolers and NB fan on it.
This mobo is not oc friendly, but it can run any AMD AM3 cpu at stock without a problem. It has a 4 phase power on this mobo.
