Which ATI Card? - Page 2

if you have the money grab a 6870 or 6850 depending on which you can afford. as my recommendation personally having owned both cards i would get a 5850 or 5870. i currently own the 5850 and i love it it stomps the 6850 i owned performance and overclock wise. however the 6870 is a toss up because my 5850 tops out at the exact max oc i had on my 6870. and im not sure if there are any benchmarks between the 6870 and 5850. i still stick by the 5850 if you can find one get it and get a second one a little later just make sure you have enough power to run them both and that your psu isnt a hunk of junk. if you need a new psu get one that is 80+ rated and highly spoken of.

£180 with the cooler

So how do I tell if its a "reference" board?

Ok, a 6950 has 1408 unified shaders and a 6970 has 1536 (if you want to know what these do exactly just google it ).

To unlock these extra shaders and essentially make your card a 6970, follow the instructions here: http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/...ng/vidcard/159

I would suggest not to flash your card with a 6970 bios! Just use the "ATI Winflash" tool to unlock the shaders. To do this, rather than flash your card with a 6970 bios, just flash it with your own 6950 bios:

- Save your current bios (using GPU-Z: click the little black chip with a green arrow coming off it, its next to where it says "BIOS version")

- Use your bios to flash the card using ATI Winflash tool.

P.S You might get a error like "Could not erase ROM", there's instructions on that page to fix that.

P.P.S First thing, you might want to check whether it has already been unlocked, if the "Shaders" in GPU-Z are 1536 unified then it has already been unlocked.

If I'v missed anything, someone please let OP know.

If it fits an Accelero Xtreme Plus, it's a reference board.
Non-reference boards change the size and position of the board's mounting bracket for the cooler.

mmmm GPU-Z says 1536 unified in the Shaders box so looks like its unlocked already. Lets hope it works ok as I have no original BIOS in case it breaks.

Update, so far so good. Only issue is a little distortion when loading Eve Online. Goes away after a few seconds then its fine, ran for 4 hours last night with no issues.

Another thing though is a funny whining noise from the rig occasionally, that just the card being stressed or something?
