The EVGA GTX 460 2WIN Is Cool, But...

Why would someone want this? As in, it is ~$400, not to mention you can't even SLI it with another one. If you were going to buy this, why wouldn't you just buy a GTX 580? Lower power consumption, and close to the performance of the 460 2WIN without all the SLI problems. You could also just go with the world renown XFire 6950s, for $100 more and get almost double the performance?

Why couldn't they make something more reasonable if they had to do this, like maybe a dual 470 card, or just an OC'd 580 (for the noobs that can't overclock their GPUs)? It doesn't make sense to me, people are hating on Fermi for high heat and power consumption, so what is this gonna solve? Even a watercooled GTX 480 could match this thing's performance.

I guess my conclusion is, although this card sounds and looks cool, I don't think it's realistic.

EDIT: Wow I forgot the biggest point, if you need 460s, you could by 3 or 4 of them for this price and SLI those. That's twice the performance for the same price.

The idea isn't bad but yeah the price is way off the mark. The only real advantage compared to actually getting SLI 460s is that it's a single slot solution. If they shaved 100-150 off the MSRP, it would actually be a pretty attractive option.

I'm guessing EVGA ate a loss on this one.

460s are only capable of 2-way SLI.

Not to mention you can't actually buy 4 (or even 3) 460 1gbs new for $400.

It's cheaper, faster and consumes less power than the 580. That's why.

It also has 3 monitor support with one card.

I heard this one supports surround mode. Correct me if I am wrong.

It does but with 1GB of VRAM per GPU... it's not going to do it well.

-It is cheaper and faster than a 580, but not capable of SLI

-Didn't know 460s could only do 2 way, my mistake

-Multi-monitor support is a good point, this card might be ok for that.

Not bad. If the price go down a bit it could be good.

How do you figure it draws less than 244w when each 460 can draw 160w?

Last time I checked 160w + 160w = 320w and 320w > 244w.

Even if the card has 20% better power consumption than two standard 460s it's still at 256w.

Um... it does not have lower power consumption than the GTX 580, not to mention you can't SLI them. There's really no reason to get this if you're a gamer. A Radeon HD 6870 or 6950 1GB CrossFire is a good amount faster and costs the same or a bit more, respectively.

If we're talking folding, it makes no sense either. A 2600K costs $320 and delivers more than 2x higher PPD when over-clocked. You could use the argument that for the 2600K you'd need to make a new build, but chances are your board doesn't have more than two PCI-E X16 slots, unless you want to give up one and get lesser gaming performance. If you get a motherboard with many PCI-E slots, those are much more expensive and the price will ultimately be similar due to the fact this consumes more power and you'll need a high-end PSU.
