Temperatures over 100*C when playing

Thread Starter
Hello guys, i saw that sometimes when playing my frame rate goes from 30-40 normal to 3-4 for some time, seconds or a minute. I got GPU-z and i made a log watching a 1080p movie using the graphics card and from half playing WoW at high settings. I have a Gigabyte 8500 GT, 512Mb, with passive cooling. Temperatures reached 103*C while playing and i think its kinda bad but then i think that they knew what they were doing when they made the video card this way.

I have this graphics card .
I uploded the GPU Z Sensor Log if you are interested.

What am i asking is should i put some thinking into attaching a cooler to it? It is necessary or would be just playing safe. Thanks.

103c is going to cause that card damage if you keep using it like that. Take a look at newegg's gpu coolers. The Zalman VF900 would probably fit your card but it's a bit pricey and truthfully I think it's time for a new card.

Just so you know, at 100c you can BOIL WATER. Of course it's not safe!!!! Just replace the thermal past and zip-tie a fan to the cooler and you should be within reasonable temps.

Hmm that newegg link doesn't work (even when I fixed it, it says the product was deactivated)

You could try ghetto modding it, attach a fan with zipties or something to the passive sink, or even just adding a fan somewhere in the case that gets air across it.

The card itself may be made to run that hot, but its better to keep stuff as cool as possible. I mean I wouldn't want to run anything over 90C for prolonged periods of time.

Yeah, i'd say get a new card. ATI has some really low priced cards that will slaughter that 8500.

Thanks guys. I'm running for about a year with the case open both ways on the ground. I have a spare cooler that was attached to one side of the case and i can, probably, fix it on the radiator to blow air towards it. The problem is that i have under it at about 1 inch on the radiator side the sound card witch is the same length as the video card.

I don't have the possibility to upgrade like some of you are recommending (and when i do i would like to change all of it) so for now this is it. dsc00065zh.jpg

No wonder you're running that hot, your case is a breeding ground for dust bunnies! tongue.gif

For the love of God take that outside and blast it with a can of air/vacuum.
U should clean your case. It looks more like a beach then a computer case. Get some compressed air and clean it out or use the vacuum cleaner. This will bring down the temps aswell.
