Update* on MSI Lightning 6970

So I decided to Give MSI a fair shot and just RMA and get another one. They over nighted to me and I put it in and played a solid hour of CRYSIS 2... smile.gif Im happy first of all because no black screens no crashes... no VRMS going to 100c...

After the 3 matches (6 rounds) I went to my sensors tab and clicked on max and it showed 79c 81c and 81c and a average of like 67c... Is this all normal even for this "beast" of a cooler. 81c? this is with the fan profile as auto. about 35% fan speed.

OVERALL i'm happy with it as the 940core 1375 memory is a nice out of the box overclock which means I could even go farther than say... THE sapphire 6970 (blue pcb) I was about to get.

Edit: If I create my own fan curve in MSI afterburner im sure i can drop it even lower... Is this what everyone does creates a custom fan profile since these fans are silent..?!

I gave up on MSI after my first card that was a Twin Frozr II went to 100c during benchmarking on a low OC and they refused to give me my full cash back and then they later agreed to pay me full price but it still took them a month since they said that. But I finally got the cash.

Can you please DL a copy of your BIOS using GPU-Z and post it..? I would like to try a full flash on my Twin frozr III 6950..but cannot locate a 6970 lightning bios anywhere.. its the only 1x with triple voltage control..so VRM control IC's should be the same.. hoping the flash works for full unlock

*fingers crossed* You'd really be helping me out.. +rep wink.gif

Download/run atiwinflash, hit the back up bios button.

Mine doesn't get quite as hot as yours on auto fan. Normally 65 after unigine heaven runs and SC2 games at 970/1375. However, auto fan runs much higher than 35% for me, but it's still silent in my case. I had a custom fan curve, but it's not necessary for me. The only time I can really hear the fans is when I run kombustor burn in while oc'd. The core will get up to 75 and I can actually hear the fan at that point. Btw, this is with the bios in the middle position. If you flip your bios there, it may drop your temps. Glad you're happy with the new lightning so far.smile.gif

A word of warning, while using afterburner with this card, don't turn on overdrive to adjust powertune in ccc. I think the card bios does everything you need in the middle position. I tried it and had instability with a fairly low pc with boosted voltage. I can run faster with regular volts if I leave ccc alone.

I am not running mine on the stock auto fan setup but one I made, and in crysis bench it gets up to 61c. In eyefinity I dont see it get much higher than 65.

Yes it is wink.gif .. my 6950 twin frozr can run some prttey high speeds on stock cooling, but all methods to unlock it have failed *thats why i want to try the lightning bios for the 6970... to my knowledge no one has done it yet to see if it works for a full unlock.
