Is this a good deal?

$40 for Thermaltake TR2 500W ATX 12V Power Supply

Sent my lil bro to MicroCenter to buy various parts. Exact PSU wasn't on the list, he came back with this. Debating to return it or not. Doesn't look like anything special to me.

I wouldnt trust a thermaltake psu. The only good one I know about from them is the Toughpower series. What psu's did MC have?

It all depends.

In terms of the price it is a good price. Atleast compared to the prices in Holland.
In terms of ''is it a good PSU for my computer'' well that depends on your computer specs allthough there are better brands for a PSU then thermaltake (i had to add that)

Thanks for confirming my assumption.

I dont have to go with a PSU from MC. But if Im gonna get a **** PSU, it mine as well be $20 XD

In regards to the computer: It is a work computer that simply runs automated programs 24/7. It is never truly used by a human (except to install programs & start them). Primary tasks are refreshing numerous webpages and taking automated actions (so lets say its normal load is 10 IE tabs, magicjack, outlook 2010, and a few low intensity scripts. pages and scripts run ~once a minute).

Specs:
  • AMD Phenom II x2 560 Black Edition
  • MSI 880G-E45 Socket AM3 880G ATX AMD
Onboard Video Chipset: ATI Radeon HD 4250
  • Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB DDR3 1600 (2x2GB 1.65V)
  • Western Digital 1 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 64 MB Cache
  • Thermaltake V3 Black Edition ATX Mid Tower Case

Overkill computer for what it will be doing, so I dont expect the load to ever even touch 50% ^_^

Even though that system doesnt take a lot of power I still wouldnt trust that psu. Your better off with a 300w quality psu.

Yup. Im definitely returning it. ThermalTake doesn't make quality PSUs as far as I assumed before (and have now confirmed).

Made a new thread asking for suggestions. Ran calculator online that said under 90% load, my system should pull ~200W. So 250-350W quality PSU it is
