[TH] Nvidia: The Future of Graphics Processing - Page 2

The next segment regarding Tegra's roadmap was more of a rehash of what we already know, and he whipped out the familiar Tegra slide listing upcoming SOC's named after heroes from the DC and Marvel comics: Kal-El in 2011 (5x faster than the current Tegra 2), Wayne in 2012 (10x), Logan in 2013 (50x) and Stark (75x). As seen on the slide, the CPU aspect of Kal-El outperforms the Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 processor and is 4x away from the current generation of gaming consoles... in a mobile form factor. That said, new mobile devices should pass current-gen consoles in computing performance within the next few years.
Seriously, Superman is behind Batman, Wolverine, and Iron Man? Eggheads are supposed to know better...

Even if it takes 18 months - and I agree, this is what the schedule looks like:

End of 2011 - 1024 cores - 4 fps
Middle of 2013 - 2048 cores - 8 fps
Beginning of 2015 - 4096 cores - 16 fps or around 30 in SLI, or around 40 in Tri SLI.

And that is assuming there are no other performance enhancements, which there always is.

So yes, we will get there more or less on time.

Basically predicting we will be on 14nm by 2015.

No way will we see Nvidia or AMD chips on 20nm featuring 3d transistors pushing out 32 Teraflops of FP. Even at the process limits you're still looking at a peak theoretical performance of 15 for Nvidia and 18 for AMD.

Its a "prediction" .. who cares? no point in arguing about the future when some new crap is going to probably change the game.

"No way" - why ? We are going to be at 28nm this year already. We might well be at 20nm by the middle of 2013.

But i think photorealism is further out than that....we'd have to have a perfect model for EVERYTHING. Humans would be next to impossible to make photorealistic unless based off of video captured imagery

The required budget for these games would approach the 1 billion dollar mark
You guys are forgetting the most important factor. Like above, you need to have the engine and models to take advantage of this GPU power. How nice would it be to play video games that look like avatar (realistic and quality wise), but companies would NEVER front that much of a budget for video gaming. It would not be economical to produce games with current technology. Something would have to greatly increase the efficiency of creating models.

It would also be pointless currently considering those movies are rendered... which probably takes Hour upon Hours to complete... maybe days. The hardware just doesn't exist. Maybe BlueGene could do it. lol

Gotta love the people that think we wont have "photo" realistic graphics soon. Most movies now have that and only take a small farm to render. I remember when Toy Story came out and took a HUGE rendering farm to produce it....our graphics cards today are x fold better than those entire farms.

Food for thought...
