Thread Starter
I have att dsl. Starting may02 they have started data caps of 150gb. Every 50gb over will cost you $10. For uverse its 250gb and for comcast its 250gb.

This how much I use:

Verison FiOS is not available in my area or my entire town.

What am I to do?

Tell ATT to shove it.

Comcast doesn't have a hard 250GB cap. It's more of a soft cap. You can go over it, though if you go WAY over it they may call you and ask what's up.

Moderate your downloading habits? You're lucky you get that much. Rogers (pretty much one of the two major ISPs in Canada) gives a 60gb monthly cap and charges $2 for every extra gigabyte you go over.

Where'd you find that fancy graph/page?

Last I checked, which was a few months ago when the news first came that they would start using caps, I found my overall download number dating back to when it was first installed/hooked up (at least I THINK that's what the number was, there was no way that ~3TB number came from under a month's use...), and calculated it a bit out under ~135GB or so, and we have U-Verse, so we SHOULD be okay if I did it right.

lots of streaming too. as i calculated watching netflix or hulu for an hour is 1gb, suppose you watch for 5 hours a day for 30 days.
1gb x 5hours x 30days = 150gb a month which is the cap att set.

I expressed how displeased I am. If I show them my true feelings then they have the right to disconnect me. As per section 5 point b subpoint e:
Quote:
(e) if you engage in conduct that is threatening, abusive or harassing to the AT&T or Yahoo employees, including, for example, making threats to physically harm or damage employee or company property; frequent use of profane or vulgar language; or repeatedly contacting our customer service representatives for reasons that do not pertain to our provisioning, maintenance, repair or general servicing of your high speed Internet access service after you have been asked to stop such conduct.

Also there is the part in the TOS where it mentions the cap:
Section 10(Restrictions on Use)
Point D(Network Management)
Quote:
AT&T reserves the right to engage in reasonable network management practices, to protect its broadband network from harm, compromised capacity, degradation in network performance or service levels, or uses of the Service which may adversely impact access to or the use of the Service by other customers. Reasonable network management practices that AT&T may adopt include, but are not limited to, the following: (i) a cap on data usage; (ii) a modification of a customer's serving facility or service technology, and/or (iii) a modification of or a limitation on a customer's data throughput speed or data consumption.

A very small percentage of customers use the Service in a way which creates harm to the network, compromised capacity, degradation in network performance or service levels, or which may adversely impact access to or the use of the Service by other customers. In the event that AT&T adopts a network management practice which will apply to your Service, we will provide you with a notice, by web posting, bill insert, email, letter and/or other appropriate means, which describes the network management practice, explains how it will work, and explains how it could impact your Service.

I dont understand what gives them the right to change and enforce the new TOS on me without my say or consent.

I love how people are telling you to moderate your usage. Seriously people? Blame the victim mentality happening strong.

These caps have nothing do to with fairness and everything to do with increasing revenue while disincentiving usage of competing online services.

Eventually it will change but for now we have to speak with our dollars and our votes. Be vocal about this stuff. I tell my customers about these issues sometimes too.
