Pros and Cons on Types/size of Reservoirs?

Hi, everyone! Well I have a Rasa 360 kit for my rig, and already I'm going to replace/add parts in the system. For example, I've already bought a swiftech 655, which I believe should be a great pump.

Well one of the parts I'm going to replace is the reservoir. From looking and shopping around, I've observed different sizes and shapes of reservoirs. With focus on performance:

1) What exactly are the pros and cons of let's say a tube looking reservoir (sorry don't know technical name) and a bay reservoir? What exactly performs better in terms of keeping temperature(s) down?

2) In addition, what about the pros and cons of a large and small reservoir?

I'm not exactly an expert, but I was under the impression that a bay reservoir allows you to see the water level easier (especially in cases without windows, like mine), but is more sensitive to low water levels.

Edit: Forgot the second question xP

Again, I'm no pro, but I think larger reservoirs mean less maintenance overall. Logically, you'd have to fill a larger one less often than a smaller one, given that the rate of water loss should be roughly the same either way.

Bay reservoirs have more space for water, plus I've never seen one without vortex removal and stuff to prevent bubbles going round and round the loop...
But: Tubular res have more mounting options and look way neater...

res is only for looks, no real purpose.. you dont even need one, you can just use a t-line

In terms of temperatures:

Essentially nothing, there's no difference. In thermodynamics terms, yes a system with more coolant in will take longer to heat up, but you wont see that kind of difference.



Biggest factor I would say is that some tube reservoirs can cause water to swirl around and mix air bubbles into the coolant which can then find their way back into your system. Which will affect your temps. Best way to avoid that is to watch some video reviews or ask imo though.

Or just avoid reservoirs that have inlets near the water surface or get a bay reservoir ~ the XSPC single bay res has some awesome channels in it to stop air getting back into the loop for example, I like it a lot.

None of them (ignoring the Zalman Resorator types) will affects temps other than larger ones will delay the time it takes for the fluid to reach equilibrium.

Sometimes it's easier to fit a small res if you're lacking space.

Although fluid levels will drop when filling a new loop once the air has been bled it should require only minimal topping up over a few months. One of my systems was running with the smallest EK tube res and only needed one top up in 15 months.

The only disadvantages I can think of with Bay res's is that they can be hard to fill, harder to bleed and can transfer resonance through the case if they have an integral pump.

No res will really effect the temps to be noticeable. I have found that bay reservoirs are harder to fill than the cylindrical type reservoirs. The small bay res's are nice if you need to save space and you have a free bay. I guess if the liquid level goes down far enough there would be no water getting trough the inlet/outlet, thus no flow.

Thanks guys for the helpful replies and information. Learning from your responses, the reservoirs don't really do much in terms of temperatures. With that stated, it's merely maintenance that's an issue from what I read and tubular reservoirs have that "swirl possiblity" (creates bubbles). Well since a bay reservoir means less maintenance, I shall try and aim towards a bay reservoir. Thanks all for your replies again. I shall surely rep. Peace. cool.gif

Stick with the one you like the most. Just avoid the ones that are prone to build up a vortex.


I use a 0.8L tupperware as a res, and I can tell you it has zero problems. Aside from the massive water evaporation (needs to be filled with 0.5L every friday).


Working on a top for it, and possibly replacing it for a completely hermetic one. Who knows what I'll do.

I have a dual bay res and an internal cylinder res. I use the bay res to fill as it is the highest point. It also does a great job at gravity feeding the pump.
