Bridge is not needed, but will help, you need it in SLI enabled mode.

To my understanding, the trick is the driver.
All drivers prior to 258.96 (IIRC), one can still enable SLI without the bridge. Performance would be degraded nevertheless.

If you wish, you can:-
1. When you receive the bridge, do not install it just yet.

2. Use an older driver for your GTX480 for Win 7 64-bit
Eg 257.21 WHQL or 197.75 WHQL
I know Tom's has tested their GTX280 SLI without a bridge with 197.45 for Win 7 32-bit. Check to see if you can enable SLI without the bridge installed.

3. Use the latest driver and check again.

This could be educational for everyone, including myself.
