PCIe 2.0 X16 vs. X4

Thread Starter
I have this mother board:

It has one PCIe 2.0 X 16 and one X4 slot.

If I were to buy a HD 5830 and crossfire them would I see a significant drop in performance compared to two X16 slots?

I read this page, but how credible is this information because they just taped off the pins to make it a X4 slot?

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/08/25/gtx_480_sli_pcie_bandwidth_perf_x16x16_vs_x4x4

How many FPS do you think I'll get in crysis?

Last question is HD 5850 or HD 5830 CrossFire? (Considering price and performance)

Even the most powerful cards are not limited by 8x, but with 4x there is a slight decrease in performance. so with a 5830, there might be like a ~5% decrease with 16x/4x, which is only a few fps compared to if you ran 8x/8x

My 5870 loses like 1FPS going from x16 to X4. I would think the 5830 loses less.

No, there is no SIGNIFICANT Drop of FPS is x16/x4 used. As guys above said, there might be 1-5 FPS drop. But I don't think thats significant.

Good luck!

Grunion had more elaborate fps drops than indicated by the HardOCP article, but I haven't had more than a 5% drop compared to 2x16x benches I've read.
You also have to realize that there is some overhead from CFX that adds to the loss. Scaling has to be added to the 4x drop to get actual results.
That said, I wouldn't go and buy a new dual 16x board SIMPLY for the increase it offers, unless you are in the market for a new board anyway.
