GTX 260 Faster than GTX 280???

Thread Starter
I recently tested a EVGA GTX 280 and an EVGA GTX 260 card both overclocked to their maximum. I found that the GTX 260 scored higher in 3DMark Vantage Performance than the GTX 280. Sure I was able to clock the 260 higher, but the bandwidth, pixel and texel fillrates are higher in the 280. What gives??

Here's the OC specs...

GTX 260 P12997

Core: 729
Shader: 1484
Memory: 1296 145.2GB/s
Pixel Fillrate: 21.7 P/s
Texture Fillrate: 54.3 T/s

GTX 280 P12345

Core: 679
Shader: 1476
Memory: 1269 162.4GB/s
Pixel Fillrate: 20.4 P/s
Texture Fillrate: 46.7 T/s

*note all other settings on PC remain the same throughout the test. Ran three tests with similar results.

Something is bottlenecking or your GTX 280 is getting old, which of course I doubt.
Your CPU should be bottlencking at all. RAM neither. Hmmmmm, this is weird.
How's the drivers, and you suing the same/most recent ones for both ?

Cpu bottleneck.

Also the cpu has to work harder to keep info fed to the GTX 280. So that's why the score is alittle lower for the GTX280.

Yeah both using current drivers...270.61.

Bottlenecking? It's a 4GHz quad. I doubt that would bottleneck a 280. When in games GPU-Z shows 98% GPU load.

I am running the minimum required PSU for the 280. Might have something to do with it?

His score wouldn't go down due to a cpu bottleneck, he just wouldn't see gains when installing the more powerful card.

It could be that the OC on the 280 isn't completely stable.

What's your CPU-NB OC'd to?

I doubt there would be a bottleneck here. Was more of guessing. I think maybe your 280 is throttling because of not enough power from your psu, or the OC isn't stable.

Honestly,

When the original GTX260 and GTX280 came out, the 280 was faster.
but when the revised GTX260 CORE 216 came out, the differences between 260 and 280 became slim, to the point where the 280 wasn`t a good buy anymore...

they should be real close in performance....

CPU-NB is at 2000MHz.

Do the 200 series throttle? I thought that was a new feature to the 500 series.

I tested the 280 at stock speeds and it's a little slower but not a huge difference to indicate an unstable OC.

Pff .. of course that would come from a 980X owner ..

Anyway .. Some guy this site got 11666 on his GPU score with an i7-920 at 4GHz and a GTX 280.

Another one got a GPU score of 11292 with a GTX 260 and a Q6600. I belive the Vantage settings to be stock, but I can't be sure.

OP, did you enable Physx ? It has a great impact, apparently.

I just ran Vantage at stock settings. So Physx could have been enabled but if it was it was enabled for both cards.
