MSI 6950 TFIII PE/OC- testing w/ CL3P20 - Page 6

Wow, I wish I had the ballz to get into these kind of mods for my Lightnings! Sucks being a total noob...

how are you measuring switching freq. Ive been reading a few data sheets and it looks like on most cards it is set with one resistior is this true or am I reading the sheets wrong??? Or do you have super secret tools in your garage?
Well.. there is no actual datasheet for this IC... but it is close to a few others. Unfortunately they have no information listed on RT at all ! Only mention of Switching freq in the pdf - is "RT set by external resistor" then it says see details below.. and the table is empty

I started looking at some other charts, like the one that Pizza posted... seems you either need to cut the stock resistance in half.. or double it, to about-double the Switching Freq of the circuit... Since stock was 30k.. I tried lowering resistance first...and found the results I was looking for with ~15-19k set.

*Only 'secret' tools my garage has, are for RF... Spectrum Analyzers and Signal generators do my little good with mods though

My 6950 gets the same fps as the op in 3dm11 @ 920/1420 flashed with 6970 bios ..

Weird you had to overclock yours to 1050mhz to achieve what i did at 920mhz .. If i could clock that high i would get much higher fps .

rev1 pcb seem to perform better , especially with the 6970 bios as that just practically makes it a 6970 . glad i went with my instincts back last year and bought this card . Rev2 pcb dont seem to peform as strong , as iv seen now your card @ 1050mhz performs like mine @ 920 .

Being that we have different CPU's you cannot judge FPS in this regard... especially with that particular benchmark. If you want to look at GPU performance.. compare 3D'03 run with yours..

The cpu has nothing to do with the first 3 graphic tests , i got exactly the same FPS as you in all 3 with my clocks at 920/1420 .

I beat you in the physics tests obviously , thats not relivant to the gpu testing though .

My pcie freq is at 130mhz , that helps bandwidth ..

Just saying it seems the first reference 6950's that hit the shelves perform stronger than the newer ones , at slower clocks . I get similar results to the 6970 lightning , have beat it in some benchmarks . Kinda odd .

Your still not correct, sorry. Your CPU has everything to do with your FPS. Consider both:

1. your CPU has much better latency than Clarkdale is capable of even at extreme tuning

2. with only 2x cores, this CPU is bottlenecking results of the GPU [painfully obvious running 3d'03, where 20mhz of CPU speed is bringing HUGE gains].

1+2 = your CPU will produce VERY different results with the same GPU

*Again.. if you think your GPU is so special... run 3D'03 and compare please.

Clarkdales are terrible for framerates. Their lack of cache and cores makes them lose to a similar setup with a different chip.

With that said, it's expected that an unlocked 6950 Hybrid would be faster than a stock 6950, even if overclocked.

LOL you just said you flashed to 6970 BIOS....so now you are comparing your unlocked card that is essentially a 6970 to clepto's card that is still locked as 6950...

of course you are going to beat him....

@Xristo

The extra shaders alone are about a 9% increase in raw computing power... but should transform to about a 5% increase in real world perf.

Lol , physics test to compare AMD GPUs ?? Gimme some of the good stuff too

In short , PROOF ?? How random can this be ?? The same cards with the same memory controllers.. same GPU clocks and same VRAM with BETTER COOLERS perform the same . Stating anything to the contrary is outrageous.
It's like saying my AMD 955 C2 stepping is slower than your 955 C3 stepping at the same 3.2 GHz.. no logic , you see.. even though the C3's are a proven better stepping revision.
