Windows Vista BCD.

Now... I finally give up :@. I have tried tons and tons and wasted hours on trying to repair bcd but to no avail. so i installed new windows copy on another hdd to breathe for a while!

I made partition to partition copy not full hdd backup which requires the other HDD to be completely empty. I once made a full hdd copy from 40gig to 80gig and everything worked perfectly but his time my other hdd had my data so made another 81gB partition, then partition to partition copy on it.

But the windows never worked. It kept saying BOOTMGR missing. Lets not talk about backup and windows restores. They dont work. Using cmd and reading alot of guides, i still couldn't do it. fixboot fixmbr fix that bcdexe this bcdexe that. NOTHING!

Please tell me the exact codes that i need to run to fix my winy.

I had this issue before.

1. Disconnect ALL other hard drives so that you're only playing with one MBR (every hard drive should have an mbr).

2a. Use the repair console found on your windows disk

or

2b. Use Super Grub Disk to boot into the broken OS, and then run EasyBCD while in the broken OS to repair the bad MBR.

I personally used 2b. and it worked like a champ. I just told it to remove everything and started from scratch. No more issues.

I'm sure somewhere there is a guide to boot SGD from a USB, but CD works quite well.

Did you only have the HD with the broken windows 7 install hooked up when you tried to use EasyBCD the first time?

If you did, here are the steps I'd like you to take when using EasyBCD (and be careful to ONLY have that one hard drive hooked up while doing it)
  1. Press Edit Boot Menu
    • Delete Entries you see. We're going to rebuild it our self, but with a bit of automation
  2. Press Bootloader Setup
    • Now, check to see if the partition is showing the correct drive in the drop down list (it should because I've asked you to only have the 1 drive hooked up)
    • Then Press the Install BCD button
    • Now, under MBR Configuration Options on the right, select the desired MBR (Windows XP or Windows 7)
    • Press Write MBR
  3. We now need to check what the new MBR/BCD holds, so press View Settings on the left side
    • It should now be entirely empty if I recall correctly
  4. If step 3 was empty:
    • Go to Add New Entry
    • Select the desired OS from the top right hand side, make sure the drive letter is correct, and press Add Entry
  5. If step 3 was not empty:
    • Check that it said this already:
    Quote:
There is one entry in the Windows bootloader.

    Default: Microsoft Windows 7
    Timeout: 10 seconds
    EasyBCD Boot Device: C:\\

    Entry #1
    Name: Microsoft Windows 7
    BCD ID: {current}
    Drive: C:\\
    Bootloader Path: \\Windows\\system32\\winload.exe

That is what you should see when all is said and done here. This would mean that you have something valid to boot from the MBR when you try to start windows (if it's windows 7)

The method for Vista should be the same as 7, and the last thing you should see using view settings should just have Vista in place of 7
