I7 920 not stable yet

Hey everyone,

This is the first time that i am overclocking my pc. I run a asus rampage II gene and i have talked with a guy in the mobo thread that has the same i7 920 D0 and same motherboard. He is able to get his pc stable at 1.24375 cpu volt. Yet i am running my pc at the mom at these bios settings.

AI overclock: manual

OC from Memory level up: auto

At the moment i am running on my overclocked pc prime 95 for about 1 hour and it hasn't crashed yet. But on 1.32v on cpu it crashed after 2hours of prime. I am afraid this 1.33v will crash aswell and everytime i up my CPU volt the temps increase. Atm i am running at peak 71c and on average 66-69c

This guy had the same mobo and proc also stable at 4.0 ghz at 1.225 cpu volts.

These where his settings:

Here are my settings for 4.0Ghz:

aside from other ram that we are using he changed all the voltages like the IOH voltage. Yet when i try those settings in my BIOS 1.7966 IOH voltage it turns red and i quickly backoff scared that i am going to fry something. But if i put these same stats in and put IOH voltage on auto it won't boot to windows.

So now my question is how can i get this stable and lower cpu volts?

In my bioss my ram is set to 1603 mhz but my ram is listed as 1600 mhz is that bad?

Please help me get my system more stable.

thank you in advanced if you have any questions ask them.

kind regards,

my bios sets the ram at 1603 thats fine, my 920 needed 1.32 to stable 4.0. Its the luck of the draw what batch u get.

dunno if its because ur using dual channel ram?

1.7 for IOH is to high.

Below are the settings I had for a 950/Asus P6T Deluxe v2. You can see the voltages that I was using for a 4.2GHz OC. Note that all CPU/MB combos are different and the voltages someone uses may or may not work for you. Under DRAM Timing Control you will need to change my 6-7-6-18 settings to the settings for your ram.

wel at the moment i had a 5 hour of prime95 before it crashed. then i tried linpack 20 solves max mem 20k problemsizes and it crashed at cpu volt 1.35 before getting 1 run. I find it kind of strange tho since it was able to run at a lower voltage for 5 hours at the same clockspeed. Now i am running the linpack at 3.8 mhz instead of 4.0 mhz and that is passing. I am wondering if i change my cpu multi to 21 and bclk to 190 i got 4.0 aswell does that make a diff in cpu volt. I heard that 1.35v is max for I7 core is that correct? I see that everyone has like 1.8v + cpu ppl volt setting i have it on auto could that make a difference?

I really would like to get to 4.0 but not at the cost of frying my mobo. Temps aren't a real problem. they are at 1.33v still 68-71 c so if i can increase manuel cpu ppl volt to be able to decrease the cpu volt that would be great but does it work like that?

does your system were stable at 4Ghz at what cpu volts??

well at 4.0 it ran 5.5 hours prime95 blend at 72 c max before it crashed at a cpu volt of 1.33v but it didn't pass linx 20 runs max ram 20k problemsize. I then started using linx to see if i can get any setting to run 20 runs max 20k problemsize. I can get 3.8 ghz to run those linx setting at 21 x 180 bclk at 1.35 cpu v.

most overclockers run it for 10 hours. for linx also use full mem. what is your QPI/DRAM volts?

You seem to have a bad chip like mine. You cannot seem to find a balance between voltage and temperatures. Is the 4.0 GHz target worth it if you are having such a high voltage and temps? Sure, you are below the 1.37 INTEL spec but still ...
