Another 460 768mb for SLI or 580/single card solution? - Page 4

Thanks for keeping it ontopic james. I'm definitely looking at the galaxy 580 which is on sale@ newegg for under 500 and selling my 460. Reason ati was sort of an option is that I am getting a third monitor soon but i have an 8500gt fanless card lying around that wouldn't add much power wise.

yea u should just get the 580 with the accelero. it'll be quiet and cool. you'll be happy
don't go sli if ur scare of noise.

PS: don't waste ur cash on the 3 GB version. that much vram is only needed for 3 LCDs. with the light gaming that u do, the 580 will last u at least 4 years.

btw why are we even discussing radeons? clearly in the title and the original post, the person wants to compare GTX 460 768 MB SLI and GTX 580 1.5 GB. the radeons weren't even in the discussion.

again, the OP said that his primary priority is to reduce noise. do you amd people really thinks that ur crossfire solutions are quiet by any mean?
Because, when going for a multimonitor setup, it's either a 580 3GB (which costs a fortune) or much cheaper Radeons which provides a much greater value price/performance wise. I just think it's OK to let OP know his options.

I have absolutely no interest in multi-monitor setup I actually used to have 3 24" monitos for a softTH setup.. if anyone knows that that is, pretty sure it's what inspired nvidia and ati for their setups. Distorted perspectives just don't really help in fps and aren't as impressive as one would think they are. I think they'd be okay for a racing setup maybe.
I ditched those cheap crappy samsungs for an nec 30" and plan on getting a 27" to compliment my 30" and above mounted 24".
More so for productivity and photo editing.
It's just the 30" that's been bothering me trying to play games with my entry level 460, just not cutting it. I think i'm decided on selling it and getting a 580 either the galaxy 580 or sparkle 580 with accelero extreme.
Power consumption is a concern for me as well and I think two 460s on idle would consume more power than the 580 correct me if I'm wrong.

Learn to read. I believe it's a matter of getting the most out of your money. And as I said: For the price of 2x 580s you could go trifire 6970 or 6990 + 6970 and crush the 580s and still have money left.

Compared to 570 and 6970 the 580 doesn't even come close to being worth it. And if money isn't an issue, as you claim, why not just invest in watercooling? The Radeon setups are beasts under water.

I can definitely speak from experience here

I run 2560 x 1600 and I have SLI 460 768MB's. Yes it can run the resolution, however you are often limited by VRAM. I also overclock mine to 900MHz so bear that in mind. I can run BFBC2 at 4xAA just fine, fps is typically 100-60 ish

- 460 with 2gb gets you almost nothing as the memory bus doesn't have enough bandwidth. SLI 460 with 1gb would be a lot better than the 768s though, 2nd hand SLI 480's/470's would be very good alternatives. If you want to buy new you could look at the SLI 560 too
- a 580 will again handle the resolution very well, but again you won't be able to push maximum settings in all games without a 2nd card.
- don't bother with a 3gb 580 unless you're going SLI
- crossfire 6950's that can flash to 6970's are very affordable options
