Aircooling setup modifications for upcoming SLI?

Thread Starter
Hello dear overclockers,
I'm new here and have a list of questions to present, mainly about cooling (which in my case means air). Still, there are some Q's that has less to do with air cooling. So please move topic/guide me if I'm asking questions that do not fit the subforum so I can repost them elsewhere.

Question #1: My cooling on the whole.

I have had this setup for 3/4 year now (bought and built last autumn) and it has ran pretty well. Basicly the specs are somewhat like this:
  • CPU: AMD Phenom II x6 1055T @ 3,96GHz
  • MoBo: Gigabyte GA-890GPA UD3H rev 2.1 w/ FF BIOS
  • Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 1GB OC @factory 715
  • Q.Skill Red Viper 4x2GB 1600 CL9 @~1100MHz
  • Seasonic S12II-520 Bronze Non-Modular
  • CPU Cooling: Noctua NH-U9B SE2 w/ both fans
  • 2x Samsung SpinPoint F3 32MB 7200RPM [250Gb & 1TB]
  • WLAN-adapter @ PCI
  • DVD-RW Optic Drive @ Upper drive bay

My air flow is visible here:
Air flow
Besides the red arrows showing the source (fan) there is one at the side panel which blows towards the graphics card (In between PCI-E slots).

And now we can proceed to the real question. Is there a way of improving my air flow and lower the temperatures without modding the case by adding additional fan slots nor changing to expensive water cooling?

Here are the temperatures.

Idle (Using internet & Listening to music)

Load (Music, Internet, playing with full graphics Modern Warfare 2 and Minecraft running in the background)

Question #2: Will a new CG (SLI) affect my temperatures harshly?

Above you see my current CG which is Gigabyte GTX 460 1GB OC. Besides it, I will aquire another GTX460 for SLI (MoBo Patching). The other GTX460 will be: Asus GTX460 1GB DirectCU TOP V2 (Click the name for review and tech specs).
The new card will be inserted in the PCI-e x8 slot and the cards will be bound together with EVGA SLI bridge. The PCI card (WLAN adapter) will be put one slot lower.
So, will be temps rise too high and is it effective to keep SLI when I have one x16 slot and one x8 slot?

Question #3: Overclocking my CPU and RAM

So I have been overclocking my parts a bit. By reading the 1055T topic here I got a tip about setting my values. Here is my CPU-Z:

CPU

RAM:

So I managed to rise my FBS so that CPU Freq will reach up to 4.0GHz which was a bit too high for me (as I run air cooling). Still there's one prob: My RAM. Im not able to rise it even close to the factory frequency of 1600. BIOS shows that the available speed (current) is somewhere near 1100MHz. The multiplier was x4 or something near that.
Anyway, how am I able to keep the CPU freq at 3.9GHz at the same time with RAM being the normal 1600 or above? Ive tried rising the voltage of the RAM to the highest stable, but my OS can't boot up (ends up with blue screen, freeze or black screen with text). Any suggestions?

That's it for now, thanks for everyone willing to help

1. you can start with wire management and that will help temps
2. Yes, there will be a temperature jump from adding another card, and it is worth it with x16 x8, you will see no performance loss with those cards

I second the motion for cable management if you can. Takes time and zip-ties. But really, just test different fan configurations. First thing I would do is try and get that heatsink horizontal then make any top fans intake. SLI will raise temps, but if you just get a good fan nearby it will help.

Thanks for both repliers

I will start with the wire management ASAP, got to go search for something to line em up at the cable management area. Sadly, an investment on a modular PSU would have saved me from all this trouble. But what can you do

About making the heat sink horizontal. Got to check it out, I'm not sure if the mounting appliances are adjustable for that purpose. Well, you find out by trying. I wonder where's my thermal paste...

And about the temps on GPU, I read somewhere that modern day GPUs hold up to 90-100C and are fine with up to 80C. If that's true, I should make it.

Btw, about that fan blowing towards the PCI-e slots... Should I make it to blow out of the case so it would move the air away from the cards? As a side note, it is a Cooltek 1200RPM fan
