Are you sure it is the PSU making the noise?

I use a CX430 in my folding rig, and even under the load of a 4GHz i7+ GTX 260, it isn't any louder than a case fan.

My budget is £50 to inc. postage. I'm pretty open on where I order from if UK based, but the usual suspects - scan, ebuyer, ebay - are all good.

I'm pretty convinced. I have jammed the case fan and CPU fan, and while the former makes an ever so slightly audible breeze, (the latter none), stopping neither isolate the dull hum I hear. The most recently added/swapped component is the Feezer unti (heatsink and fan), but even prior to this I would hear the hum of the old power unit, and my memory recalls that as being louder and buzzier.

How loud is your GPU? I find it strange that a 7900 isn't louder than a 430CX...

And are you sure that the hum isn't resonance from your HDD etc?

Unplug the GPU & HDD and reboot, and see whether the noise is still there.

Removing the 6-pin plug from the graphic card won't stop its fan, for this I need to take the card out the PCI slot. I did unhook the power for the harddrive, but of course booting from CD, got full blast from the DVD/CD drive, which made isolating the hum more difficult. And then I only booted to have the nvidia driver kick-in, and kill off the noisy graphics card! (i've no bootable USB pen drive)

But going by ear, I still remain largely conviced its reverberations of the PSU that I am hearing.

I didn't mean unplug the 6-pin, I meant unplug the card. And the HDD. And the DVD - you just need the board to post to determine if it's the GPU sound or the HDD, as the PSU will still be running. If you still get the noise, it's the PSU, because it's the only thing left...

^Okay, just did that. Yep, it's the PSU.
