He could always make a bootable USB flash drive to install Windows. That's what I did when my netbook didn't have a CD Drive

Just curious, would the HDD info still show in the BIOS if it were truly FUBAR'd? I want to know if it is worth trying to install XP from a USB stick..

If you can't find Windows, you can buy a copy or have your mom use Linux. If you don't want to use USB, get an external DVD or CD drive and put the disc in.

Depends on the damage.

Physical damage such as dropping will generally show in the BIOS as okay since you are reading version information off of the PCB. Loading any other information (which would be from the platters) you may be up the creek though.
