Using MCP120-RES as a reservoir?

For when I get to finish up my watercooling loop, I'm thinking of just using a Swiftech MCP120-RES radiator as my actual reservoir. I can front mount it with a fan easily enough - but I want to know if anyone has experience with this series of radiator - and how easy is it to bleed? I've already purchased my tubing which is all black so for bleeding my loop I will not have any visual clues if I go this route.

I don't have specific experience with that res, but I can see you'd certainly have some issues being able to check or empty your loop.


The way I would get around it is to have a clear tube coming off the reservoir to a fillport, and a T-line coming off the loop near the bottom for draining.


That way you'll at least be able to monitor fluid levels and have a moderately foolproof way of draining your system.

Its radiator rather than a reservoir - but it's one less mount point I have to figure out in my case. I can always get a real reservoir (or just one of those tube ones) but the being able to monitor fluid levels worried me since I have all black tubing.

You don't really even need a res/radiator, you could just have any old radiator and have a T-line with clear tubing so air can collect there and you can see the level of fluid in the loop.

It would also help you a lot to have some kind of bleed valve at the top of the loop.

Essentially the blue (clear tubing) line coming off from the bottom of your loop is the reservoir. Air will collect here and you will be able to see your coolant level. This should go from the bottom of the case with the pump (to make sure it's primed) to the top of the case. And it doesn't need to be visible most of the time, you could run it around the back for example.

You will want to have a bleed valve in this loop, because naturally an air blockage will form as soon as you put water in. The by having a bleed valve on the radiator at the top or just at the top of the loop, you will be able to release all that air and near completely fill the loop with minimal air bubbles every time.


Since I've said this here, I think I might do this on my loop in fact lol.

I'm hoping to have all the funds by the end of august. The list is in my sig (although the 2nd radiator is quite optional).

Loop Order is to be MCP120-res -> MCP655 -> PA120.2 -> PA120.2 (on Motherboard side) -> EK Supreme HF -> MCP120-res

I'm thinking of keeping the MCP radiator on the Motherboard side just to have a more circular loop and leaving a little more working room on the PSU side of my M8. If any extra funds become available I'll just get a GTX360 in addition to my PA120.2 although its looking like that wont be an option, but I'll hope.

Plans are for filling my loop I'll just have my case on its side, the MCP120 as the highest point in my loop - and if I go with a T-Line that'll work out well. I'm not sure as to how well the loop will bleed if I just went with the MCP's reservoir fill spot - Hopefully someone on OCN has one of these types of radiators and can share the experience of bleeding their loop here :-p

EDIT: Seems as though I can use a standard barb or fillport w/adapter on the top of this res - barb -> ball valve -> + 1' clear tubing should act fine for bleeding the loop. Draining the loop will be easy enough as I can just tilt my case around to make that radiator the lowest portion of my loop.
