The 320MB and 640MB models are the older and slower ones. I think they were the slowest GeForce 8800 models (sans maybe the GeForce 8800GS which became renamed anyway).

From what I heard, the 320mb/640mb 8800gts were indeed slower than the 8800gt, but the revised G92 8800GTS were on par or faster than the 8800gt. As for the 640mb version, sacrificing slightly newer architecture for more memory is worth it in my book. It maybe slower than the 8800gt, but not by much.

You're not going to be doing much with an additional 128Mb of VRAM. To be able to increase level detail and notice the difference, you'd probably have to have at least 768MB.

On the other hand, the 8800GTS 640MB uses more power (80nm fabrication process) than a 55nm 9800GT, or even a 65nm 8800GT/9800GT, gets hotter, and is slower.

Here, look at this comparison between an 8800GTS 512MB (basically a slower 9900GTX), an 8800GT 512MB, and an original 8800GTS 640 MB Superclocked (it's not even at stock settings).

The 8800GTS 640 is way behind in lots of games.

nVidia messed up with the naming around then, and despite people hating nVidia for their renaming, the names these cards were renamed to is what they should have been to begin with, so when you compare them, it'll make it easier to look at it using their new names.

GeForce 8800GTS 640MB < GeForce 9800GT (8800GT) < GeForce 9800GTX (8800GTS 512MB).

The GeForce 8800GTS 512MB/GeForce 9800GTX is around par with a GeForce 8800GTX if I remember right (winning some, losing others), and the GeForce 8800GT itself is very close as well, so the difference between these other cards and the GeForce 8800GTS 640MB is about as big as the gap between the first generation GeForce 8800GTS and the GeForce 8800GTX. The older GeForce 8800GTS (320MB/640MB) shouldn't really be considered at this point.
