Since when do kernels need to do math or use simd? Kernels/cpu's just do i/o and memory management, none of which can be accelerated by a GPU...

An OS is a huge variable that's best ran by a highly flexible CPU. When GPU's become more general purpose then I can see this being adopted by Windows, but for not it's nothing more than a novelty feature that a Linux Apologetic can boast about being superior to Windows.

Nvidia is supposed to be putting an ARM core on the same die/PCB as Maxwell.

This is awesome, just incredible! If I understand correctly, this is about allowing the CPU scheduler to send work to the GPU, when that work is more suited to vector computing (as opposed to relying on the CPU's SIMD instructions, as currently happens, assuming programs were compiled that way)

maybe if amd came out with drivers that worked things would be different

Yes - but the purpose of the operating system/kernel is really just to allow the applications easy access to the different parts of the computer - effectively to just stick in a compatibility layer between the programs and the rest of the hardware. The potential uses of this are really specialized - the types of operating system calculations that really slow down the computer. As far as I can tell, they gave one of the best mainstream examples when they did AES filesystem encryption on the GPU - I personally can't think of many other CPU-intensive kernel operations.
