A Warning of Cheap PSUs

Do Not Buy Cheap PSUs.

I used to have a Thermaltake TR2 430w running my system before I had 2 video cards, after about 11 months it died on me. Luckily, I did not lose any hardware when it went out on me.

After that died I got a Coolmax 650w from the store I got the TR2 from as an upgrade for $20 (due to psu troubles from the tr2). Just this past Friday afternoon it died on me while I was folding. This one only lasted for about 5 months . I had to steal a 400w out of my sisters older rig to use as a backup and had to remove one of my cards so that it won't explode on me. Even with the precaution of removing a card, I won't be playing intensive games with it. Once again, I'm very lucky that it didn't take out any components with it.

I'm so sick of PSU troubles and I've wasted $80 for those two previous cheap PSUs that both died on me after not very long of use. Today, being so sick of cheap PSUs, I went on the egg and purchased a Corsair TX650V2. Hopefully, this being a good quality, name brand PSU, I won't have anymore troubles.

As for the Coolmax, I'm going to RMA through the company that I bought it from and keep it as a back up.

I think I've learned my lesson on cheap PSUs and I'm glad I didn't lose any components over it

I hope others learn from my troubles!

I'm running that same PSU for no problems for almost 2 years.
You killed it with 2 video cards.

As for the other PSU, then I agree, it's junk.
4-year build.

I didn't run it with both of my cards. The Thermaltake just quit on me one morning.

EDIT: 5770's also have a very low power draw. I probably could have ran both cards safely on it if it was a good quality one.

It's pretty well known on this forum to not cheap out on PSU's.

There's also a sticky in the PSU section for recommended PSU's within a certain wattage range. Worth checking out when you're looking for a new unit.

If only I would have checked it out before I got the TR2

I probably would still be running the same unit to this day
