Basic sim card question

Thread Starter
So I just bought a Samsung Vibrant off of Ebay. When I try to turn it on, it asks for a security pin, which I of course don't know. I tried hard resetting the phone, but it still asks for the code, and the default 1234 doesn't work. My question is, if I buy a new sim card and put it in, will it allow me to set up my own pin and use it completely as my own? That's how I understand it works, but I've always been on Verizon, so I'm not familiar with how sim cards work. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks a lot, and sorry for the noob question.

the code has to be from the previous owner of the phone. ask that person what the code is if its a phone lock, if its a sim lock then talk to your provider.

I am pretty sure it's a sim card lock. If it is, a new sim card wouldn't have the lock, right?

if its a sim card lock, since the vibrant is a t-mo phone
you'll have to unlock the phone
either yourself using the sgs unlock tool which requires root
or paying someone for an unlock code (cellunlock.net is pretty good from what i've seen)

I don't need to unlock it if I want to stay on t-mobile though, right? Just get a new sim card?

if you're on t-mo
it's probably the lock that was used by the previous owner......i would ask the buyer for the pass code

t-mo sim + vibrant= no problem

Yeah, I figure it's left over from the previous user, but I got the phone on Wednesday, and messaged him that day to ask about it. He still hasn't responded to me, so I'm just a little worried about getting it to work. Like I said, I've erased all the user data on the phone, but it still asks for a password to get past the first screen. Is there anything else you can think of I can do to reset the password to my own? I am getting a new sim card anyways, but just wanted to get into the phone asap because it's like having a new toy on christmas and not being able to use it, haha. Thanks a lot everyone.

Rep given to all that helped so far.

hmm
I don't know if vibrant users have a 1 click odin recovery.....if you do then you could go into download mode and reflash a fresh stock ROM...that might wipe out the pass codes

Edit: guide here, might work for you

This, or assuming its the same as HTC's he could go into the bootloader and factory reset it. Either would do the job

I did a hard reset and selected to erase all user data from the boot menu, but the code was still there.

I'm going to try that guide you posted right now Pie. Will update on how it goes.
