New Build Thoughts, with a few questions

Thread Starter
In January I bought a few parts to upgrade my old computer. And this week I just graduated from college and I was thinking about spending some money to not just upgrade my computer but to do a whole new build all together.

In January I bought a corsair HX850 power supply. Based on the parts listed below. Will this be enough? I also purchased a Haf X. So I will be putting all my components into that. Than moving my old stuff back into my old computer and using that as a media pc or maybe a ubuntu box.

Processor - Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost)

CPU Cooler - CORSAIR Hydro H70 CWCH70 120mm High Performance CPU Cooler When you do push pull on this is it left, left out? Like both fans pointing out the back of the case? Or do you want cooler air from outside blowing in on the radiator?

Motherboard - ASUS MAXIMUS IV EXTREME

Memory - G.SKILL Ripjaws X + Turbulence II Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 Does anyone have any suggestions on this? I was originally going to go for some 1600 Dominator GT 16gig. But I was told to go up to these. The 2133 that is.

Graphics Card - Either XFX HD-699A-ENF9 Radeon HD 6990 4GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card with Eyefinity or EVGA GTX 590 CLASSIFIED Limited Edition 3GB 768-bit GDDR5 PCI express 2.0 x16, 3xDual-Link DVI, DisplayPort, HDCP Ready, QUAD SLI Ready, PhysX, 3D Vision Surround Support Video Card I am still undecided. I am leaning towards the 590gtx simply because all my card for the last 10 years have been nvidia, and I've never had a bad one. But I've been hearing good things about the 6990.

Sound Card - ASUS Xonar Essence STX Virtual 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Express x1 Interface 124 dB SNR / Headphone AMP Card I live in an apartment, and plan on staying here at least another year. Right now I have been using Audio Technica's AD700's and have really been liking them. I, however am not sure if my headphones would even be improved by this card. I am running on an old X-fi Falaty card right now. Once I buy a house I'll aim for a speaker setup.

Monitor - ASUS VE276Q Black 27" 1920X1080 2ms Full HD HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor I'll be buying 2 of these. I already own 1. So I would have 3 27in Monitors for my surround vision or crossfire whatchamacallit. I was originally going to get the cheaper 23in models. But multiple people told me to stay same size and dimension.

Boot Drive - Intel 510 Series (Elm Crest) SSDSC2MH120A2K5 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Gaming Drive - Western Digital VelociRaptor WD6000HLHX 600GB 10000 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive - For Steam / BFBC2 / Left 4 Dead 2 / etc

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks guys.

What exactly are you hoping to do with this set-up?

I ask because if its mostly for gaming, then that 16gb of memory and the i7 is probably overkill for no reason. Usually I would recommend 8gb and the i5-2500k.

Otherwise, good combo, similar to mine other than the memory and the graphics. That solid state drive has been a dream so far, but I've been putting all my games on it and its getting tight on storage, so I already want a second one.

And yeah, for surround and eyefinity, you'll definitely be glad you got all three of the same monitors.

That and as much of an nVidia fanboy as I am(sli 460's and haf x nvidia edition) I have been hearing really iffy things about the 590, but only rave reviews of the 6990. I wouldn't fault you for crossing over.

if your only gaming then and wont be using the HT on the 2600k then go for a similar rig to mine minus the gpu's. For gpu I would say an unlockable 6950 (heard it reference 2gb models, could be non- reference)

Yeah I was planning on using this computer for mostly gaming. I will use it for other things, like Work, Email, Facebook, watching TV shows off hulu. The occasional netflix movie. I have it on my PS3. But I still watch movies on my computer from time to time based on if I am working or not. But these are all basic low strain things.

I was only 'aiming up' on the processor and ram because I was thinking 'future-proof' in my head. I'd like this setup to last like 4 or so years. Like my current build has.

Yeah the 590 gtx and the 6990 is making me all squirmy for some reason. I feel like i'm leaving my comfort zone even considering an Ati card. But all the reviews and stuff are saying its top notch.

Then yeah, I'd drop the i7 for the i5, unless you're like me and just have it in your head that you might as well have whatever is the top...;P

And you can always add memory later, but I have never come across anything intensive as far as gaming that saturated even half that 8GB. Hell, the only reason I went with 8GB and the i7 for me was because I knew I was gonna be running a minecraft server for about 10 people at any given time while gaming.

And if you're set on them just in case, then to be honest I'd say you have a good looking set-up to me.

I hear ya on the nVidia versus ATI, I have always always always been with nVidia...the only time I didn't have an nVidia card was my first IBM desktop that had a Voodoo card in it..and since then I've played on a 7800gt, 8600, 8800gt, even my little college hp laptop a few years ago had an nVidia 6150 in it, then a GTX 260M, and now my dual GTX 460's. I would almost feel dirty building with AMD/ATI...;P

If I decided to go with 2 EVGA SC 580 GTX's in SLi. Would the HX850 power supply be enough? With everything else on my list?

Haha, I was thinking about your build when I was talking to customers today and I just got home to suggest that exact thing. Most games scale pretty well with SLI, there are the occasional few that have horrible support, but I know Bad Company hasn't been one of them recently, so I doubt Battlefield will either. I'm pretty sure 850 will be more than enough for that build, my set-up hasn't had any issues with 750, and the only reason I went with a 750 over a 650 anyway was the 750 was on clearance for less than the 650. Of course your 580's are going to draw some more juice than my 460's.

Nice! For a minute there I was thinking I was going to have to fork over another 200 for like a 1200 watt power supply or something. I'll remove that from my list.

The HX850 should be sufficient for the SLI 580s. This thread shows that a single needs 310W and 2xSLI needs 627W max.

No such thing as future-proofing, man. By the time that games use that many threads and more than 4GB ram (or half of the stuff in your build, really), there will be something bigger and better and cheaper than anything you can buy right now. Only reason to get an i7 and more than 4GB RAM right now is if you do CAD or video editing or something and *really* need that extra performance.
